Great sounding concert (2008-07-17) In this DVD Genesis plays before a large crowd in Rome during their 2007 European "selection of" shows or concerts tour, as Phil Collins puts it in the documentary. Fans of the band's music will really love the concert; the sound and visual qualities of the concert footage are excellent. The songs really sound very much like the recorded versions, except for perhaps Throwing It All Away which deviated a bit from the guitar riff in the recorded version at the beginning. There really was an incredible display of musical talent when one considers the length of some of these songs with all of the various changes in tempo and melody throughout individual songs. Genesis is a great band. Phil Collins is an exceptional singer; unlike many other male artists (including one of my favorites, Elton John) the man still seems to have the same basic qualities of vocal range and pitch he had as a younger man. He seems to be able to hit all of the high notes from the songs. As is often the case with these sorts of concerts, most of the footage is focused on the lead singer, but the director made sure during editing that there was some attention made to how the other main members of the band, as Tony and Mike played their instruments. The other two concert band musicians got short shrifted a bit. The extra DVD is a documentary highlighting how the "Selection of" shows came about and were planned. It certainly had its moments but in my opinion parts of it missed the point of a concert. I thought it would have been much better to have spent some more time showing the band rehearsing, maybe some of the well known songs that they did not play in the Rome concert (In too Deep, That's All). It is the music that makes the show (not background videos), and I thought far too much effort was spent dealing with the planning of the visual components of the show. Whether bars should be behind or in front of a character in a video regarding the song The Cage was laughable because of how much time was spent discussing such a silly issue by Mike and Tony. In general I get a bit tired of hearing about the whining regarding the sad, tough life of a rock musician. "Poor Phil has to be Phil" came up a few times in the documentary...please give us all a break. To do something you love to do, making people feel good for a few minutes through a song, and getting paid well for it is nothing to regret having to do. If one does not want to do it, then don't. My rating of 5 stars reflects the concert, which is what I purchased this DVD for. The documentary gets a 3-1/2; it has its moments of interest and humor (finding a barstool to act as a drum was quite amusing) but could have been better by focusing more on the music itself and less on visuals and unspecified personal hardships.
Excellent footage, boring extra, iffy packaging (2008-06-26) If there is anything negative about the tour was that every concert was the same. Ihe same tracks. The same Phil taking pictures of the audience. The same Domino intro. So if you saw them a couple of times on tour, it was enough. That said, the footage was excellent on the DVD. Plenty of close-up and audience shots. Excellent sound. With each song, they included some backstage/rehearsal footage which was fine but nothing great. Then there's the nearly 2 hour documentary on preparing for the tour [and a massive 3 minute out-take]. Obviously some of it was staged. Hilarious part was the two guys trying to find a store for the stools getting lost due to the GPS glitch. But it wasn't too great. I would of prefered a bit more technicla stuff like more in depth on how the graphics for the big screens worked. The packaging was fine with two exceptions. Why did they put the documentary DVD in a cardboard cover instead of a plastic digipack casing. and what's with the DVD 1 & 2 digipack casing? THose snaps will break off quite easily.Would of been a bit more complete if they include the complete VH1 Rock Honors as well as the Live 8 footage.
When in Rome - Wow!! (2008-06-10) Got to see a preview of this last night (thanks Q107!!) at the Scotiabank Theatre in Toronto. We saw all of the documentary (1hr 50mins) which is very detailed and very revealing (Phil a little too 'me' focused, maybe??). Its amazing to see the stage and show coming together. I did see the actual show at BMO field (Toronto) so it was interesting to see behind the scenes.Right, the important bit - the concert. Well we only saw about 40 minutes of this (bah humbug Scotiabank! Aparently, 'Sex in the City' was more important...). What we did see was stunning. It really brought back strong memories of the show and just how powerful and emotional it was to be there and see the band after 15 years. (I did see a UK show without Phil a few years back - the less said about that, the better though...).The visuals are amazing and the sound seems very good - somewhat difficult to judge in a movie theatre though because their sound balance is not right for music. All in all, I would say this could well be the definitive Genesis release (just look at the track list!!). Visually it outdoes everything else because its shot with hi-def cameras (and lots of them) and the sound seemed pretty amazing - certainly capturing the power of the performance.I would highly recommend this to all Genesis fans - wether you saw the tour or not - as it sadly seems it may well have been their last tour. A huge pity. Would have loved to have seen Peter and Steve back in the fold. (There is an interesting remark on this from Phil in the doc., but you will have to watch it!!)
