Usher, one of the world's biggest-selling pop singers, hasn't released an album for four years. These days, our lazy, pampered pop stars need two or three years to come up with another CD's worth of tunes - and for their record company to decide they've flogged the last one to death. He won't need to release his next for another four, because that's roughly how long it takes to listen to this one. A 19-song odyssey of beautifully produced, technically unimpeachable tedium, "Here I Stand" is the album on which Usher - who used to make fun, racy dance-pop such as "Yeah!" - wants to show that he has matured. Its lyrics tell us he's become a father, a husband, a man. Its music - a near-lethal dose of meanderingly slow R&B anaesthetic - tells us he's become an inexhaustible bore. The 74 minutes album lacks substance or a fraction of innovative flair.Nothing new, here: whether intentional or not, the ground Usher stands upon is familiar terrain -- dashing all hopes that he would break new ground and giving off the impression that he is uninpired. And while that inevitably means some filler, there are some killer R'n'B pop tunes, such as recent single "Love In This Club", "Something Special" and the epic ballad "Moving Mountains", the latter with Jay-Z and Lil Wayne help breaking up some of those generic, endless ballads and add some hip-hop cred later on in the 19-track affair. It is disappointing to think that "Love in this Club" is the best effort Usher could muster. Only time, however, will tell the tale. But if you thought "Here I Stand" would be a proclamation of growth and self-discovery, think again! The album is quite the contrary: a boring display of artistic regression."The sparkling smash single "Love in This Club" which appears twice, in a pop-oriented version with Young Jeezy and an old-school remix, featuring Beyoncé cooing over a sweet Stylistics sample, is Usher's link to his clubbing past and the most successful song on the album".NewsdayBest Tracks: "Life in This Club" and "Moning Mountains".
