Excellent release from a tried and true band. (2008-07-07) I don't recommend paying too close attention to the previous two reviewers who disliked this album (although I respect their opinions), especially if you're an old fan of the band. I am also an old Juno Reactor fan, listening to this band from their very first album. But I really enjoyed this album. This a great disc, much more laid back than the usual high bpm techno fare released by Juno Reactor in the past and is best enjoyed at home. I think Juno Reactor has released an album that is really for their old fans, who have aged along with them. And really, who wants 200 bpm and fifty synths overdubbed blasting at them if you're just chilling at home? Buy this if you're a music fan and a Juno Reactor fan. Well done.
Hmm...I wanted different, but... (2008-05-09) I've been a long time fan of Juno Reactor and had started to get a little tired of the way Juno Reactor was putting out record after record that sounded the same. The sound never evolved and it's kind of sad to say songs started to all sound the same. I longed for a change in style, some kind of evolution. Now saying that you want a band to evolve but you are a fan because of some stylistic quality the band has. With Gods And Monster Juno Reactor has made a change but in my opinion it is not for the better and it lacks something. If you are a long time fan and want the usual Juno Reactor sound then this will disappoint you. If you are a fan who wants something different then maybe you will like it. The biggest problem with the album, for me, are the vocals and lyrics and lack of intensity in the sound. The music is not bad and actually reminds me of Leftfield on occasion, but know where near as captivating. The first track Inca Steppa is probably the only song that sounds anything like the Juno Reactor of old. Most of the songs are much more subdued and nowhere nears as beat driven as the songs from the Matrix Soundtrack that made them popular. All in all, its an average album by an artist trying to do something different. I wanted evolution, but this misses the mark. 3 stars for being a reasonably enjoyable listen, but not something I would want to grab out of my collection on a whim.
Barely worth the wait (2008-05-01) Big Juno Reactor fan here. I'm also a proponent of bands growing, evolving, following their muse as they see fit. That said, there's still not much to recommend this latest Juno Reactor release. I was surprised by the addition of actual songs on this release, but with the exception of "Inca Steppa", which grew on me, the vocal tracks tend to run the gamut of bland ("Perfect Crime", "Pretty Girl") to embarrassing ("Mind of the Free"). Some of the lyrics are truly terrible, too. "Tokyo ... out of my head you flow ... from my heart to my soul ... watch the energy flow" sets a cheesey tone for "Tokyo Dub" which it can't escape.Ultimately, the only tracks on this release I found myself wanting hear over were "Inca Steppa" and "Tanta Pena" (the latter of which thankfully harkens back somewhat to "Labyrinth", and is my pick of the CD). A sadly forgettable release.
