New sound to a masterpiece (2008-09-24)

This new release of Opeth's 'Still Life' is a worthy purchase even for fans who already bought the album years ago. But if you're not an "Opeth completionist" then you may consider sitting this one out. On the superficial level, you'll find a beautiful looking package with redone and expanded artwork. But aside from that, you'll find one of the best progressive metal masterpieces sounding better than it ever has. The album is remastered (in 5.1) on the included DVD and sounds excellent, especially in a day and age when the production of new is plagued by a loudness war. There are also a few other little things on the DVD, like a brief live performance. But really, that's it. There are no outtakes or demos from the recording sessions at all. Unless you're in it for the package to your collection or the 5.1 sound, there's not much here for you apart from the album itself - one of Opeth's best - but which you probably already have.
