Less Is More...Not so (2008-06-09) First off, I enjoy the Hulk, especially "Hulk: Ultimate Destruction", that game was fun and filled with the Hulk smash, open world that came out on the PS2 and original Xbox, and maybe GameCube but who cares about GameCube. Anyways, Ultimate Destruction was great, with upgrading the Hulk, jumping higher and farther, becoming stronger, doing amazing combos, and even grabbing a car and making big boxing gloves to help with the destruction made this game and its scope just massive and very enjoyable. So when "The Incredible Hulk" came out I was in a good place, thinking that this would be the next gen version of Ultimate Destruction with an even bigger and more beautiful world, along with a re-done and much improved Hulk, and a similar upgrading system.Suffice to say I was a little disappointed, "The Incredible Hulk" is a rushed game that isn't even half as good as "Hulk: Ultimate Destruction". "The Incredible Hulk" yes sports a much more realistic view of the Hulk, but the fictious enemies like gamma radiated humans or the weird machinery and robots seem a little out of place, and New York City as compared to the comic inspired Ultimate Destruction, which isn't a great thing, I liked the Ultimate Destruction much more it felt more in touch with the real Hulk. The city in Incredible Hulk is big and is nice in appearence, when moving fast, slowed down the city looks a little lifeless and bland. Mind you playing GTA IV with Liberty City and seeing how expansive and beautiful and lively that city is really shows what can be done with a city scape. Also the New York City in "Incredible Hulk" look kinda pasted on with little to no real interaction with the world, also the buildings themselves seem to lacking that certain something that would make it more realistic instead of blandly painted background, the people are only there to run away screaming or to be collateral damage. But hey I walked around as the Hulk in broad day-light without even a peep or anyone screaming look at that 7 foot green monster. The mechanics of "The Incredible Hulk" is very simple, fight, climb and jump. The fighting aspect is fun sometimes, but the gameplay is hindered greatly by its simplicity, strong and weak punch as well as grab and throw are the standard fight moves, which can be linked to simple combos ending with a power move like an uppercut or that sonic hand clap that always seems to be in Hulk games. There are also simple arial attacks like a jump with a punch to the ground. There are specials that rely on the 'rage meter' that becomes depleted when the power is used. But basically the game is hurt greatly by the simplicity of the fighting, it gets old and with no combo linking it gets hurt. The missions are peppered as set markers through-out the city, but the story missions are repetitive, save Rick over and over and over again. With little to no time allocated to be Bruce Banner, which was a little disappointing, I would have liked to play as Bruce Banner, and driving, or taking the subway trying to stay low-key and blend in, which I thought was the point of the Hulk. Instead there are the cut-scenes where for some reason Sega decided to bring back the maniquin looking humans in the cut-scenes a la Spiderman 3, with those disconnected, souless goggly eyes. One good thing is that most anything can be picked-up and used as a weapon, shield or throwing weapon, but not at the level of "Ultimate Destruction", yes in "Incredible Hulk" you smash buildings and you can pick up weapons like light posts and cars, but you can only swing them like a bat and throw them, there isn't the depth with using the environment as with "Ultimate Destruction". Like I said earlier this game was rushed for to be released close to the release of the new Hulk movie, which really hurts the game, it seems less of a game compared to Ultimate Destruction, with a poor combat system, a bland and a cut and paste city that has very bland textures and buildings. When a game is compared and bested by a previous generation version it just goes to show that flashier, more realistic graphics do not replace gameplay and depth. "The Incredible Hulk" is an incredible disappointment, if you need a Hulk fix just play "Hulk: Ultimate Destruction" it is a much better game that basically really set the bar for "The Incredible Hulk" to try to copy and not copy it that well at all. Freaking comicbook inspired games, especially the ones that are released with movies need to have more time in development, games like this and Iron Man are just horrible representations of the original properties, it's just a money grab with nothing of value or innovation coming out with these games, just more button mashing and thin gameplay. Too bad.
