How can this be a PSP game?!?! (2008-03-31)

Final Fantasy VII, one of the most popular versions of the franchise, has just gotten that much better with the release of Crisis Core. With some of the best visuals and cutscenes I have ever seen on the PSP, this prequel focuses on events that create the plot and theme within the original Final Fantasy VII. The story focuses upon events that involve Zack Fair, a soldier with great heroic aspirations within Shinra. Zack if you remember 10 years ago is the guy who Cloud befriends and later takes pieces of his history after Cloud suffers from amnesia. Although Zack fights with allies who have their own motivations like Sephiroth there is no party fighting system, it's Zack against the world or moving events forward to the point that centre around Cloud.Unlike Cloud, Zack is an outgoing, happy and overall a nice guy, but with a great deal of fighting power, Zack meets many of the characters in the original, like Aeris, Tsang, Sephiroth, and many others and that gives a great deal of backstory to the original. The developers of this game have really stayed true to the storyline, you learn more about Zack, Aeris, Shinra, Sephiroth, the origin of the buster sword, but make no mistake this is a great stand-alone title. With really well done cut sequences, voice acting, and fun gameplay, the battle system is extremely simple, but you can do a great deal with it as far as customizing Zack's fighting style, the left and right bumper buttons determines what kind of attack be it magic, normal, special weapon attack, or items; however, the game's battle system is done in real-time, but it's very easy to do it all, and very fun as well. There is also the chance aspect to the combat system, where the game is constantly cycling through other character images like Sephiroth and numbers to unlock and level up the character, magic, and special attacks, this system was done extremely well and adds some great animation to the combat. The only problem with the game is that it moves you in a linear sense to where you're supposed to be, also there are so many cut sequences, like you'll have to fight a bunch of enemies then at a point Angyeal will pop in and you'll progress forward that much of the travel is removed so it feels like the world is just a bunch of points of interest and missions. But overall, the game lacks very little as far as fun, story and substance, this a great title for any RPG and Final Fantasy fan looking for a fun and new game that is Final Fantasy but moves away from the turn-based, party fighting. Hopefully, Square Enix is working on a re-done and improved Final Fantasy VII in the wake of this game with similar visuals.
