The Great White North has not been able to bestow the title of "Canada's answer to Mary J. Blige" until now. Jully Black may very well garner that prize thanks to the passion and performance on her sophomore CD, Revival. As the first single, “Seven Day Fool,” makes clear, she deftly and seamlessly handles the Motown sound. The track--once made famous by Etta James--is in fact the only cover song on the disc; every other track features the talented Black as co-writer. With each cut stemming from R&B as a base, sass and soul pervade the disc in enough musical forms to bring forth fans from many genres. “Queen” matches a reggae beat with a melody that India.Arie would love to wrap her larynx around. Elsewhere, Black skates the edges of electronic music, as on “Never Lost My Sight,” which finds her soulful voice wrapping around a rapid-fire drum-and-bass beat. “Temporary Insanity” barely contains Black's breathy, sexy, rhythmic vocals as they deliver a melody that could fit onto the next Justin Timberlake CD. In that cut and others, the match between Black and producer (and Black Eyed Peas drummer) Keith Harris makes for a dream team, and his sense of rhythmic hooks keeps the disc extra fresh throughout. Never formulaic, never kitschy, Revival knocks out all Canadian R&B competitors and deserves to be noticed on a world scale. --Denise Sheppard

Simply delightful. (2008-01-19)

Her first CD "This Is Me", earned her the opening spot on the Black Eyed Peas' Canadian tour.This, in turn, led to a creative collaboration with BEP drummer Keith Harris, who produced her even more confident new album, "Revival".For those who dont know, Jully Black is a 29 Years Old Jamaican RnB artist out of Toronto. The CD from comes full of feeling and vibe...if you like soul, funky jazzy this is one of the best releases of the moment...When I first listened to the album I couldn't believe in the fantastic voice that she manages to put!!I' m trying to imagine her on a live performance.Words aren't enough.....buy it.....listen to it till your hears get fed up of it.My favourite songs on da album were "Queen" and "Wishing". I'm sure that you won't get bored.....

Jully Black's Revival!! (2007-10-29)

We first met Jully Black officially in 2005 with the release of her critically aclaimed debut album, "This Is Me". Spwaning such hit singles as "Sweat of Your Brow", "5x Love" and "I Travelled". Now with the release of her sophomore album, "Revival", we see Jully taking a more Soul, Rock and Pop sounding route.The album opening track, "DJ Play My Song", is defently a party-jaming track. The second track and lead single, "Seven Day Fool" is the best track on the album, having a Amy Whinehouse sounding vibe to it. On track three the album begins to slow down, with a mellow mid-tempo produced track entitled, "Queen". From there on the album takes a more mellow theme to it, "Queen" is a good way to showcase the tempo of the rest of the disc. From there we get another mid-tempo produced track entitled, "Just A Moment". The song which samples drumlines and a guitar has a good message, but would be better suited if it was placed near the end of the disc. Next is the first real ballad served up on the album, entitled, "Catch Me When I Fall", again if it was placed near the end of the album is would be better suited. After a few mid-tempos, we get back into the groove with the mid-tempo almost up-tempo produced "My Baby". Its a good song and could possibly be a good follow-up single to "Seven Day Fool". Next we dive into an odd track entitled, "Never Lost My Sight". I find myself liking this song after the first few listens. "Temporary Insanity" is another odd-ball track, except I find myself not enjoying it so much. It is a kind've techno-pop sound. If you like the genre you might enjoy this one. "Until I Stay" is a mid-tempo song that sets the tone for the final few tracks. The songs just average, theres really nothing stand-outish about it. "Wishing", just another average song. I find the beat annoying, because of the skipping. The closing track "Mystery" is the best ballad of the album and perfect for the final track. The song has a 80s sound which keeps you tuned. Lyrically the song is also one point. This would also be a good follow-up single.Overall Jully Black's sophomore disc, "Revival" is good. It beats most of the R&B album releases this year.
