What do you expect from a band that has been together for 20 years and released 11 studio recordings? If you've answered "more of the same," then, in Blue Rodeo's case, you'd be exactly right. Small Miracles is upbeat light-country-meets-soft-rock that oscillates between Greg Keelor's Band-esque style and Jim Cuddy's love-leaning lyrics, just like the bulk of their other ten CDs. "I held you but you held back from me," sings Keelor on the country-meets-bluegrass track, "Blue House," yet another take on love-gone-wrong but especially effective in his well-written wrought style. Keelor's gravelly voice on "It Makes Me Wonder" is so powerful and timeless, it could easily have been written by Dylan or The Band on the grassy hills of Woodstock. That song is one of a number of tracks (along with the aptly titled "Beautiful" and the funky bridge of "So Far Away") that showcases the amazing skills of newest member, keyboardist Bob Packwood, whose bluesy-soulful ivory tickling enhances every track he appears on. Although the group's most famous hit to date, "Try" (from 1987's Outskirts), features Cuddy on vocals, Small Miracles' top moments consistently seem to come from the mouth of Keelor, whose deep emotions and complex songwriting tendencies make for far more memorable lyrics and melodies than Cuddy's lighter and fluffier fare. --Denise Sheppard

BLUE RODEO - "SMALL MIRACLES" (2007-11-14)

In just a little over 12 months we've witnessed the release of solo CD's by Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor, the vocal duo that is the heart of Blue Rodeo. Both solo albums were immensely unique yet both harkened back to that essence and soul that defines Blue Rodeo, so it's nice to see the flock returning to the nest, per se, to bring us the latest chapter in the saga of this truly unique Canadian band. The first song I heard off this album was 'Summer Girls' and you're probably wondering why the band would put out this song in the fall and not the summer. Well, it was released just on the cusp of fall and the songs really about what happens when all the summer girls are gone away. As was hinted at in the first paragraph of this review, each lead vocalist brings something different to the mix; Greg Keelor sounds a lot like George Harrison on 'So Far Away', more like Tom Petty on 'Blue House' and like a Bob Dylan meets The Boss hybrid on 'Black Ribbon' yet in every case, he retains an original quality and he is amazing on 'It Makes Me Wonder'. In Jim's case, there's no mistaking his input; the minute you hear 'This Town' it's as if a dearly missed old friend just dropped by out of the blue to say hello. The same can be said for '3 Hours Away'; 'Mystic River' is a slice of that country folk rock that is recognized as the quintessential Blue Rodeo sound and 'Come On', the first single release, is one of the best up-tempo kicking songs the band has ever recorded. It always amazes me that year after year a select few bands can maintain a constant, consistent sound and never sound stale or resort to giving us sonic leftovers. This is one of those bands. The Blue Rodeo back catalogue and subsequent solo albums attest to this fact. According to the liner notes the band is scheduled to perform live at The Savoy Theatre on February 18th of next year. There would be no better place to experience these fantastic songs and more. Until then, this CD is the next best thing.

This album like a lot of past Blue Rodeo albums continues to grow grow on me with each play. My favourite tracks are Beautiful, Black Ribbon and the title song. There is not a bad track on the cd. For anyone who enjoys tight vocal harmonies and fine musical collabarations. Highly recommended.

Much like the last two albums -- light, inoffensive, and almost caricaturesque. Nothing bad about it, and much to like. But Greg and Jim seem to be leaving the adventurous moments for their solo CDs. Ah well.
