Carrie Underwood's Some Hearts, hastily made and released some five months after she won the 2005 American Idol crown, was surprisingly solid and tuneful. For her follow-up, producer Mark Bright steers her toward the big Martina McBride skies, with a plethora of strings and huge emotional crescendos. Underwood co-wrote four songs, mostly with the tried-and-true tunesmiths who made Some Hearts soar. On the torchy heartache ballad “I Know You Won't,” she gives a beautifully nuanced and controlled performance, but if that song would suit any number of lush female pop stars from Celine Dion on down, “Flat on the Floor” rocks hard while preserving co-writer Ashley Monroe's Appalachian angst. Still, there are missteps: the easy tears of the unlikely war ballad “Just a Dream,” a too-obvious attempt to repeat the sass of “Before He Cheats” (“The More Boys I Meet”), and the Shania-ish bad-girl-on-Cuervo stomp of “Last Name.” The big payoff, then, is how much 24-year old Underwood has improved as a vocalist. How often listeners line up for this Carnival Ride depends on their attitude about country music's continual melding with pop, and how they feel about a princess upstart taking home the awards that used to go to her heroes. --Alanna Nash

Still on this Carnival Ride...I can't get off! (2008-08-29) I bought this album the day that it came out, and to this day, almost a year later, I'm listening to it constantly! Carrie is riding high on the top of the charts, winning every award in sight, and there's no stopping her! She's a force to be reckoned with and country music should be proud to call her one of their own. A recent inductee into the Grand Ole Opry, Carrie deserves everything that she has achieved thus far, and I wish her all the best in the future!! This album is amazing! Each and every song holds its own, from the first track "Flat on the Floor" all the way down to the song which includes the album title in the lyrics, "Wheel of the World". If you are a fan of country music, or just of good music in general, go out and buy this album!!
As good as contemporary country gets ! (2008-01-02) Country music purists usually like to have a go at Carrie Underwood. She's unfairly dismissed because of her introduction to the music scene via American Idol, or in regard of the fact that her music is a crossover form of country music. Needless to say that her new album, "Carnival Ride", will probably not change the minds of naysayers; as for the millions of people who bought her debut album, they will be more than satisfied with this catchy and attractive sophomore album. The spectacular success of her debut (the best-selling album from any American Idol contestant, and the one who won the most Grammys, CMAs and American Music Awards) will be hard to beat, but this one just might do the trick.Although her debut album found her split between pop-rock and country, there's no doubt on "Carnival Ride" that Carrie Underwood has now officially chosen her side; this is high-quality contemporary country, with soaring melodies, impeccable production and storytelling lyrics. The album opens up with the one-two punch of the engaging "Flat on the foor" and "All-American girl", and doesn't run out of steam throughout the eleven other songs that follow. In fact, it's a flawless collection of contemporary country songs, many of which could easily rule the country charts in the coming months. Her debut featured five smash hit singles, and you can bet that "Carnival Ride" contains even more potential chart-toppers. The moving ballad "So small" already did the trick, and the second single ("All-American girl") is on its way to the top as I'm writing these lines; expect more songs to follow, like the insanely catchy "The more boys I meet", the sassy "Last name" (a song in the same vein as the monster hit "Before he cheats"), the rocking "Flat on the floor" and the moving "Just a dream". But the album isn't just a collection of potential singles; her rendition of "I told you so" should prove just how gifted a country vocalist she is, "Twisted" is a fast-paced country rocker with an uplifting melody, and "I know you won't" is a stunning power ballad featuring her most expressive vocal performance ever (it's my personal favourite on the album). In fact, her voice has grown stronger and more assured on this second album, which is especially obvious on the closing "Wheel of the world".So this still isn't pure country music, and its pop influences are easily traceable. Big deal ! Country music is possibly the only place left where you can find real singers singing real songs with real musicians, and it has survived because it has adapted to the times. Carrie Underwood has the potential to survive as an artist, and this sophomore album will establish this without the shadow of a doubt.
amazing (2007-12-05) I have never been a really huge fan of Carrie underwood, but let me tell you, this was an amazing album. I play it all the time at work. The words to the song"Just a dream" gave my the chills when i realized just how true this is. She also did an amazing job on the song"I told you so", by Randy Travis. I say...Go ahead, give it a shot and buy this album. You won't be disappointed
Carrie conquers contemporary country (2007-10-23) The second album from Carrie Underwood packs slightly less punch than her debut, but is still more than enough to further cement her place in the contemporary country hierarchy. Solidly country, this album showcases Underwood as a singer/songwriter with writing credits on four of the tracks - first single "So Small"; the excellent "All American Girl"; "Crazy Dreams" and the comedy track "Last Name". (If you liked Alan Jackson's "I Don't Even Know Your Name", you'll see lots of similarities to the aforementioned "Last Name".) All the tracks are worth a listen, but some are immediately worth an instant replay. My recommendations are: Flat on the Floor - a hard-rocking track with attitude All-American Girl - instant single material with heartwarming lyrics So Small - soaring first single about not sweating the small stuff Just a Dream - a tear jerker with a wonderful chorus Crazy Dreams - catchy beat just slightly reminiscent of Pink Floyd's "Education" I Told You So - slow ballad written by Randy Travis Wheel of the World - an easy listening track with inspired backing music If the four tracks on which she has songwriting credits are any indication, Carrie Underwood has nowhere to go but up - should be a wild ride. ANOTHER #1 CD FOR CARRIE (2007-10-16) I just listened to 'Carnival Ride' online and it was amazing. She has another #1 hit on her hands and I can see more awards in her future.
