Customer Reviews
Get's an 'A' for effort, sort of... (2008-03-14) 'Army of Two' the brand new and shiny shooter from EA, is exactly that a shooter. Set in the not too distant future, involving private armies and corporation running the world into the ground. Yeah sure it has the whole polished graphics and ok-ish sounds, truly what is expected from a next generation multi-platform game, with some new attempts at innovation that kinda fall short because it doesn't integrate into the game that well. Example, the co-op system, and the entire tauted ally AI, within the campaign mode yeah the ally AI is ok, you tell it what to do, which is simple, either run in and start shooting, diverting all attention to himself, or vice-versa, all to build aggro, also to allow for a sneak attack. Sounds cool right, except one problem, the enemy AI is set to crackhead, so they'll run around in all directions getting shot, then taking cover, climbing the cover, getting shot, then running over the cover and getting shot some more, very frantic, so all the planning in world wouldn't prepare you for the insanity of the enemy AI, not that your ally isn't that tactically sound, he'll do the same thing as the enemy, run around crazy. The action is so frantic and random that gameplay aspects like back to back shooting is an add-on, it's only specific to a certain situation, go can't just start doing it, the conditions are preset by the game, which sucks because it is fun to do it, but largely it is a pointless addition to the game, the player should be allowed to back to back stuff whenever the player feels it necessary.Another problem is the lack of non-gun action, which boils down to kicking, head-butting or punching, all linked to the 'a' button and it depends on the specific location of the character to execute these moves, very touchy and not that fun to do, so you'll be shooting a lot, a knife would've been cool also a more intuitive auto-kill system would've added to this game. The game is also in a somewhat static 3rd person constantly where the camera is always moving about. This is strange considering the game is extremely linear in the stages, there is no back alley to sneak around, you're just always pushing forward, very little stealth. There are fun bits and pieces to this game, it is high paced and can be very fun and intense, also there is an equipment upgrading system which can help out with the gameplay, more bullets, better armour. Another cool aspect is the semi-interactive enivronment like pulling a car door off a car and using it as a shield while your partner is shooting. But it is strange a car door will protect your character, and your chubby ally behind you, meanwhile you'll be getting shot up going behind cover that somehow just doesn't cover all. Also the story isn't that bad; however, this game is more a rental before buying. EA tried to elevate the shooting genre above what it is by creating some new mechanics and modes, but with really crazy enemy AI it's really tough to take this game seriously. 'Army of Two' is one in a mass of futuristic set run and guns, with a very traditional and linear level progression. This game is probably great fun with two players. There is fun with this game, even in single player, there are just better games out there then this one, give it a try.
