Silliest ending ever! Hope the wolf eats the game designer! (2007-10-22) My grandchildren and I are diehard fans of the Nancy Drew games, but we have found the new games have become increasingly dumb and abrupt in their conclusions. The White Wolf of Icicle Creek has lived up to this expectation with one of the silliest endings of all. After plodding through this mystery (you must have snowshoes that are a little difficult to procure), and cooking meals that seem to have no purpose but to fulfill a make-work agenda, and finally making it into a much-ballyhooed secret room, the game takes over leaving the player with almost nothing else to do. The end is so silly and so abrupt and so unsatisfying, we were nearly (just nearly) turned off from buying any further versions of the Nancy Drew games. But there is always hope. The game ends as though the designers were meeting a deadline, got fed-up with being creative, wrested the controls from the player, with the advisory that "time was up -- everyone out of the pool." If this was a romance, it would have been one of those very unsatisfying one-night stands. The repetitive jobs (Nancy does them for FREE -- and even risks getting fired) seem silly after the umpteenth time. At least, in earlier mysteries, there was a good reason to repeat tasks; they paid money which Nancy needed to purchase items. As a buyer and player of ALL the Nancy Drew games, it is my sincerest wish the designers remember that we are intelligent players who are anticipating a reasonable (not Oscar-winning) storyline, semi-credible characters, somewhat credible clues (would be nice in this game), and challenging but not infuriating puzzles that have something to do with the outcome of the game.As to the ending, don't take away our autonomy; let us figure out a way to defeat the bad guy. The ending to White Wolf is akin to a highschool student being given a elementary grade examination. Not fair or respectful to the player who has vested many hours in the game.Overall, unless you are a diehard Nancy Drew PC game fan, avoid this one. Spend your money on some of the older games, which are actually much better.
Average game in a great series (2007-07-05) ICE, the newest installment in the Nancy Drew PC game series, did not rank among my favourite ND games. It was enjoyable enough, but there were some things missing that have made other games in the series better in the past. For instance, the puzzles lacked the intense complexity that you find in the Curse of Blackmoor Manner. Every puzzle seemed to relate directly to the plot, a problem that has been present in the last couple of games. We need some more red herrings! Having said all that, this game still does a lot of things right. It's an intriguing mystery. The plot is interesting and the setting is gorgeous. There are more on-screen characters in this game than in previous ND games, so that was a plus. I found the ending a bit glitchy, though still entertaining. The new menu format in ICE was really easy to use and I liked that you could have your list of phone numbers right up beside you when you dialling. It saved a lot of time. Unfortunately I didn't use the phone a whole lot in this one because I didn't want to talk to Tony, who is by far the most annoying phone character in any ND mystery. The game is average in length. If you play without hints it should last you the advertised 20+ hours. But if you play with the strategy guide or the message boards, you'll be done way too soon. I don't recommend doing that because this game is not very replayable once you've solved the mystery! Excellent game for kids, and for those of us who remember Nancy Drew from our childhood.
