Sometimes it's O.K.--even important--to put aside your reluctance to embrace artists who make teenage girls scream. It happened in 2006, when Justin Timberlake scraped the sludge off pop and left something shiny behind, and it's happening again in 2007 with Maroon 5. It Won't Be Soon Before Long, the L.A. band's sophomore studio disc, rode in on a crest of hype and crumpled expectations--fan reports had it that Adam Levine & Co. scrapped their signature pop-soul sound for something harder and darker. Not so. Shades of Prince, Hall & Oates, and Sting still color the Maroon sound (check out the spectacularly fizzy "Little of Your Time," as well as the first single, "Makes Me Wonder," a song catchier than fire), but they're made ever fainter here by the clamping down of five guys on what is essentially the most distinctive pop sound to emerge from a single band since the Bee Gees squealed into the mid-'70s. It Won't Be Soon squares hip-hop sensibilities ("Wake Up Call") with rock ones ("If I Never See Your Face Again") and stormy moods ("Can't Stop") with bittersweet ballads ("Better That We Break"). It's a disc destined to defy detractors and go on to greatness, elevating the credibility of teenage girls for years to come. --Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews
Funkier than the first album. (2007-12-10) I enjoyed this one a lot more than the 1st. I don't really want to call it "pop-y" but it's upbeat and well, funky really. I think I got used to the singer's voice because it doesn't sound so screechy to me anymore. Great sounding songs to bob around to.
A Good One! (2007-08-03) I'll make this short and sweet. There's a number of good songs on this cd. Out of the twelve songs, I really liked eight, and the others were alright. Pleasant surprise!
Refreshing and enjoyable. (2007-05-25) Soulful rock band Maroon 5 have returned to the musical fold after a somewhat protracted musical break. The new album "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" is a collation of songs that show off every single Maroon 5 influence to a tee. It's a pretty enjoyable album, all things told, with the upbeat pop that the band so favour playing a prominent part. This keeps the album, on the whole, upbeat and chirpy, something which is refreshing to listen to.Tracks like "Wake Up Cal"', a jerky, pumped up pop tune show off the skillful meld of lead singer Adam Levine's slightly nasal voice with his band's polished playing, a sound seamless in creation and so, so, so easy on the ears.Maroon 5 have put together tracks ranging from the slightly balladic and sing-a-longa "Back At Your Door" to the '80s stylings of "Until You're Over Me".They've even gone a little Britney, with the delicious, fast-paced stand-out track "Little Of Your Time" giving off distinct scent of being rather alike to Spears' hit "Toxic".Pretty much every track on here is a great potential single, with simple yet effective songwriting and lovely piano and instrumentation."It Won't be Soon Before Long" shows that the band hasn't really changed much over the time they've been away, apart from to rejuvenate. They sound bouncy and awake, happy to be making music, and although you're not going to get a whole new genre from the return of Maroon 5, their cheerful, catchy music will get you dancing almost immediately. Their music will never be rocky and unreliable ala Babyshambles, off key or a bit bonkers, but it's still good to see them back, and with such a great album.
Upbeat, catchy and funky... (2007-05-22) Who says boy bands are dead? They've simply swapped the formation crotch-grabbing for guitars. Take pop band Maroon 5's new hit, "Makes Me Wonder". Cooing, simpering, thrusting - it's practically a Backstreet Boys song with riffs. The rest of this album's the same. It's so enragingly catchy and difficult to get it out of your head.Virginian songwriter Ross Copperman says he's inspired by Radiohead. He can't fool us. The moist-eyed strumming of his debut sounds as if it has Gary Barlow's pastry-greased fingermarks all over it.Record sales are power, and Maroon 5 have quadruple platinum power in US thanks to their mega-selling debut album "Songs About Jane", which also bagged them a Best New Artist Grammy, just for a bit of extra leverage.Ten million sales of "Songs About Jane" mean that Maroon 5 have to follow a formula; funky sound, catchy chorus, and copious mentions of the words "love" and "goodbye". But it proves to be a winner yet again with this 1st single "Makes Me Wonder" from "It Won't Be Soon Before Long". It is so deliriously upbeat and instant that you can already see the follow up album flying off the shelves yet again. Unlike Justin Timberlake, no vocoder required as Adam Levine sweet, soul sound is more than enough to get you moving. It is guaranteed to be a hit and a stock track at weddings all over the world.""This Love" ... the sequel.
