Xbox 360 2007 Game of the Year (2008-01-18) I was very skeptical about this title...I was never the biggest fan of Bioware previous console titles (KOTOR, Jade Empire) so I wasn't exactly sure if this game would live up to it's hype...thankfully my hype was practically non-existent and my opinions were left wide open. From the moment you start creating your character, to the open cinematics...to the final cut-scene...you're completely pulled into a world that looks and plays excellent. The visuals and cut-scenes are very impressive...and your choices actually reflect the way the council and people react to you. The combat might be complained about but works really well...the controls are dead-on and I never had a single issue commanding my team or myself. The game might dip a bit on the framerate...I chose to remove the motion blur effect...but I highly recommend keeping the film grain on because it provides ton of atmosphere to the whole presentation. The story is probably the most interesting and engaging i've ever experienced in playing a videogame...I actually cared for my teammates and the choices I made. I am currently on my 2nd playthrough just because I enjoyed it sooo much...this time I'm making different choices and can already see the difference in transition to the overall plot. My only complaint is it ended too soon...otherwise it would have been a perfect 10. Everyone MUST play this game.
Massively Great (2008-01-15) Mass Effect, the much anticipated and delayed RPGs for the 360, has finally been released, after months of the game being pulled back due to massive glitches, or you could say a mass of glitches. However, honestly, this game is amazing looking, the best I've ever seen, with skin and textures looking amazingly close to reality, this game has a movie quality setting, with a humongous amount of character customization that is trickled through into the main story. You play as Shepard, be it male or female, human though, and with that your background can be military, a space colonist, or an orphan, then you can decide what kind of person you are, the sole-survivor of a great massacre, a war-hero, or a ruthless person who strives for completion of mission at all costs. All these things effect the kind of person you are as well as how others speak and treat Shepard. Also NPC interaction is determined by the dialogue Shepard. Shepard, himself or herself, can be a soldier, an adept - a biotic user, someone who's been modified with special abilities, very Force-like, an engineer - someone who can sabotage the weaponry of the enemies. Then there are the adept versions of the other two jobs. Not to mention the amount of customization that goes into the making of the character, which looks amazing still. Mass Effect has voice acting throughout and amazing visuals that are done in actual gameplay visuals, which makes this game really brilliant looking. There are however, many glitches still with this game, which amount to frame-rate issues, and some flickering animations that are obvious through-out the game itself, but these issues are so small when seen against the great visual experience of Mass Effect that you won't even care that sometimes the game can sputter. I wondered in passing if Bungie didn't put so much detail into the presentation then there might not be these glitches, but when I saw skin and the textures I stopped thinking that the game is that great looking. Also the menu aspect to the combat is interesting, you as the player can decide positioning as well as attack used, but the menu interface is a little touchy, and you'll need your comrades to fight with you, and the ally AI on the game can be a little dumb, so you need to control them. You can treat this game as a shooter, and run around like crazy, hoping that the ally AI will do something amazing, but then you'll die lots more. The real time combat is amazing, but you need to work the menu constantly to win the larger more difficult battles. There is also a planetary exploration aspect to the game, with certain atmospheres there are heat and cold hazards that will damage your person shields, so you'll have to stay in the tank that you're supplied with, which is sometimes silly to drive around in, but still fun with the tank being able to scale up and over mountains. There are two guns on the tank, a cannon and a chain gun, once you figure out how to drive the tank the battles with it become much easier, but it's more fun to play as the characters, since the tank's shield takes so long to re-charge. But the tank can be fun to play with, there are different sized enemies that'll require the use of the tank like the colossus geth or the geth apeture. However, with all the small issues with the game all fall to the side when you see and play the game, also with the amount of character customization as well as weapon and armour upgrades. This is a great title, and a very long game, worth the price; hopefully, this will be the benchmark for future Xbox 360 games, sans glitches, this game is a keeper. I can't wait for the sequel.
Good buy if you enjoy titles like KOTOR (2008-01-15) A little buggy but can probably live with it. Epic storyline and very very deep game.Combat system is a little like Gears of War but remember this is an RPG so you have to be prepared for a lot of dialogues (most are skippable)Weapon mods are a pain in the butt to manage but once you get the hang of it, it's not too bad.A must have for those of you whose played and enjoyed KOTOR!
