The first clue to the sound of Avril Lavigne's third CD, The Best Damn Thing, comes in the form of her kickoff single, "Girlfriend," which is filled with singing, clapping, and cheerleader-style chanting. The song is quite a sonic contrast to her previous disc, Under My Skin, which was considered to be Lavigne's more mature follow-up to her 16 million-selling debut CD, Let Go. Like that debut, The Best Damn Thing will be largely and deeply embraced by teenage girls, and is packed with songs that will create enthusiastic sing-alongs in concert. There are a handful of numbers that will appeal to a wider audience; "Innocence" and disc closer "Keep Holding On" would both fit perfectly in a Gray's Anatomy episode, while the sultry message and solid harmonies in "Hot" will appease ears of many ages. Lavigne's husband, Sum 41 frontman Deryk Whibley makes an appearance as producer and instrumentalist on a handful of tracks; their union, however, seems to have bred more than love. "I Don't Have to Try" and "Everything Back But You" both have a frenetic pace and chorus that is so eerily Sum-like that if they weren't married, a copyright lawsuit might ensue. That aside, the record oscillates between lyrically acerbic fare ("One of Those Girls," "I Can Do Better") and fluffy sugar-pop melodies ("Contagious," "The Best Damn Thing") delivering far more spunk rock than punk rock. --Denise Sheppard

The worst damn thing! Her lyrics are so annoying! (2007-09-15) She has a nice voice but her songs all sound the same including her lame Lyrics. She comes across like she is so full of herself it's pathetic!
Disappointing (2007-09-07) After I heard Under My Skin, I was really looking forward to hearing what Avril Lavigne would release next. Unfortunately, this is what I got. Yes, there are some catchy tunes on this album, but they are immature and I got tired of them so fast that I was sick of this CD after two days. The Best Damn Thing = a waste of time and money.
The Best Damn Thing ... Not (2007-08-13) After the maturing of Avril, I expected golden tracks. However, it feels as if the Avril we knew was gone. I am more than okay with change, since I love Madonna and she changes all the time. But unlike Madonna, it doesn't feels as if Avril changed and matured. Instead, she started over again, and it just doesn't impress.Album Cover: 2.5/5This album cover is... strange. The background does not fit with the logo, and Avril's clothes make her look like a clown. Her expression suggests major photoshop gone wrong, but the logo is excellent.1. Girlfriend: 4/5Anyone who thinks this song is not catchy is lying, but Avril message, the one where the more beautiful girls get everything, is killing the self-esteem of growing girls everywhere. Also, the lyrics sound immature and it almost sounds exactly like "I Want To Be Your Boyfriend", which goes "Hey/Hey/You/You/I want ti be your boyfriend". Similar, eh?2. I Can Do Better: 2.5/5The first few listens are okay, but then it gets annoying and bitchy, which is not very good.3. Runaway: 3/5This is better than ICDB, but it still gets annoying fast.4. The Best Damn Thing: 2/5I am yawning as I listen to this song. Full of cheerleading shouts and screams, this will not appeal to anyone but pre-teen girls.5. When You're Gone: 3.5/5This is a very well-crafted ballad, and the piano is awesome, but Avril gets shouty in the bridge of the song that makes me have a major headache. This would sound a lot better if someone else sang it.6. Everything Back But You: 2/5Yelling, screaming, fighting, etc.7. Hot: 3/5Auto-tuned vocals, great beat, okay lyrics and a great melody with cheesy lyrics. YAWN.8. Innocence: 3/5Using the same effect to make this voice thin but high like the one in Mariah's "Through The Rain", this song is innocent and boring, but has a great melody.9. I Don't Have To Try: 2/5More yelling, screaming and bitching.10. One Of Those Girls: 2.5/5A good message, but very very boring!11. Contagious: 2/5Even more yelling and shouty vocals. Hooray!12. Keep Holding On: 3/5This song has great melody and great vocals, but Avril just sounds a little bit too detached. Add that and the cheesy lyrics and you've got a well-crafted filler.Overall Rating: 2/5Since its release, this album has sold 4,000,000 copies worldwide.
the worst damn thing (2007-08-09) This would be a great album if you took out the singing and the instruments and added the sound of a dentists drill. Anything to stop this hollow, soulless, corporate puppet product and her songwriters from being heard.... yeah yeah yeah woooh This is probably "the worst damn thing" to come out this year
Catchy Summer Album (2007-06-30) Avril Lavigne's "The Best Damn Thing" is not as 'different' than her previous albums as most people claim. I think the simplicity of "Girlfriend" threw off some fans, and they immediately closed the doors. The album is generally a great summer album, although it may not live as long in the stereos of the die-hard fans as did her previous releases. While Avril's last two albums had their "edgy" side to them, like Losing Grip, Take Me Away, Forgotten... some may be surprised to find out that only one 'edgy' track made the final cut (I Don't Have to Try), and even that isn't as hard as her previous efforts. But Avril wanted to keep the album generally upbeat and something to party to and sing at the top of your lungs. Here's a track-by-track review:1. Girlfriend - Okay, we've all heard it. It's ubearably catchy and simple... Don't judge the rest of the album from this song. For people who are saying Avril's a bad influence for being a homewrecker in this song, READ THE LYRICS, it's not supposed to be taken seriously AND the girl she's stealing him away from is a jerk anyway - that's why "he can do so much better". gosh.2. I Can Do Better - This song reminds me quite a bit of Under My Skin's "He Wasn't". Same story type, the guy is a jerk. But she's past the feeling sorry for herself stage and is ready to tell the macho man off.3. Runaway - Typical old-school Avril Lavigne song. A catchy, pop rock tune that would've fit like a glove on the Let Go album. I think ANYBODY can relate to these lyrics... something Avril's good at - catching the link between her and her audience, finding common ground in her lyrics.4. The Best Damn Thing - The lyrics are pretty sassy and funny. The style of this song is quite similar to Sum 41's "Fat Lip", with the spunky rap-ish verses, builds up with a catchy rock bridge, then EXPLODES with a jumping anthem chorus.5. When You're Gone - The current single and first ballad on the album. It's a typical Avril ballad, showing her vulnerability and neediness of her lover. The lyrics are heartfelt and accompanied by an awesome string arrangement.6. Everything Back But You - This song is the hyperactive power pop punk song that Avril's been trying to live up to all these years. It could easily have fit onto an early Blink 182 or Green Day album, and build up into a catchy, in your face chorus. It annoys me how people are like "stop singing about break ups, you're married now"... Hmmm, that never stopped Blink, or Green Day, or .... Any singer for that matter.7. Hot - Another catchy song that you'll have stuck in your head for days. It's another typical Avril pop rock song. It bugs me how people get offended by the lyrics to this song, have none of you HEARD "Things I'll Never Say"?!8. Innocence - Another ballad on the album. It's a cute little piano song where Avril's trying to sound sophisticated, I bet it'll be cool to hear in concert as an encore or closing song.9. I Don't Have to Try - Surprisingly the hardest song on the album. It's written different than anything Avril's written before; she sings through the eyes of the spoiled rich girls of Hollywood Hills, who get everything they want, when they want. It's definitely the hardest track on the album.10. One of Those Girls - This song fits in well back to back with the last song. The melody is alot more lighter and boppier, as Avril gives her point of view/opinion about the type of girls the last song was written for.11. Contagious - Another typical Avril song. Pop Rock anthem with submissive lyrics about her boy crush not noticing her, but how she is the right one for him and he's the right one for her.12. Keep Holding On - The closing song of the album, and the first single released back in December. It's a fitting song to end the album with, a catchy power ballad. So even though this album is missing some key Avril elements, it still holds together quite well. If you're looking for something harder, try her b-side on the Girlfriend Single "Alone", it may tickle your fancy. All in all this is a good summer album and Avril still knows how to write the catchy, clever lyrics that most teenagers can relate too and she manages to put a different type of twist on it to keep her sound fresh. If your looking for something to put in your car for road trips with friends, or are a longtime Avril fan ready for some fresh material - than this album is for you!
