I had purchased the 'Legions of Rome' DVD Boxed Set primarily for what I hoped was to be three realistic and authentic reenactments of these famous battles. I had hoped that wherever possible, these reenactments would take place on or near the sites of the original battles. It certainly did not appear to me to be the case (?). I suppose we all have been spoiled to some extent with the historic authenticity and painful attention to detail provided by such series as HBO's 'Rome'.After reading phrases such as "superb battle reconstructions" in the product descriptions, I was extremely disappointed to discover that these videos would not even come close to what I had hoped for. The costumes and weapons used in the battle scenes were makeshift and extremely amateurish. The small number of participants shown in each battle scene, their lackluster attempts to depict what was supposed to be ferocious hand to hand combat became almost laughable. The one redeeming factor in all three videos was the on screen opinions expresses by various experts, acedemics and historians of Roman military history. All and all I was extremely disappointed and feel that there was nothing gained by watching these videos that could not have been gotten from a multitude of great books available on these subjects.
