J.J. Cale penned two of Eric Clapton's career-defining solo hits, "Cocaine" and "After Midnight." And since Clapton has often fashioned his persona in a WWJD manner (what would J.J. do?), this collaboration is long overdue. But despite the rather slick production and long list of guest backing musicians (including four bassists, four drummers, five other guitarists, and three percussionists), The Road to Escondido is still dominated more by Cale than Clapton. The relatively reticent Okie wrote 11 of the 14 tracks, and it's his low-key soufflé of blues, jazz, and country that shapes and directs the disc's tone, with Clapton along for the ride. The opening "Danger" sets the dusky mood as the duo rides a typical Cale swamp groove that gives way to a tightly wound Slowhand solo. They trade lead vocals on a lovely version of the after-hours jazz blues classic "Sporting Life Blues," and the ubiquitous John Mayer makes an impressive appearance on the subtle blues of "Hard to Thrill."Clapton hasn't sounded this relaxed or involved in his own material for years. The traditionally laid-back, if not quite snoozy, Cale responds with a comparatively energized performance, likely due to the high-profile company. When the two harmonize on the mid-tempo foot tapper "Anyway the Wind Blows," the result is so natural and spontaneous it's a shame these two didn't join forces earlier. On paper, it appears that Cale has the most to gain from partnering with an established superstar, but the fact is this collaboration yields Eric Clapton's most engaging and contagious roots-rock release in a long time. --Hal Horowitz

Smooth, classic jjc (2007-06-16)

I bought this CD thinking it was an Eric Clapton revival album...it isn't! It's a very smooth jj Cale album and I say that because he wrote most of the songs. It's his songwriting that catapulted Clapton's career, and here the two experienced masters share some great moments. Neither of them overstate their presence on this collaboration. A CD for a rainy Saturday morning. There is no information on the name of the CD in the liner notes, however, but also it must be said no attempt either to oversell the CD on the merits of these two huge stars. It plays well, and having bought it on speculation I am completely satisfied.

No thrill at all. (2007-04-10)

This is a very disappointing and boring album. There is nothing fresh these guys have to offer. One of the songs "Hard to thrill" should have been used for the album title. Some just do not know the best time to quit.

He did it again! (2007-01-09)

I don't want to sound like a broken record but this effort is on par with the other botched effort called Back Home. The whole album sounds like it is recorded in a mush mobile studio. Both E.C. and J.J. sound like they are muttering the lyrics and the over production makes the whole effort sound all the same... boring. I had high hopes of some sort of redemption after his last bomb but I guess this proves that 'greatness' does not mean quality only musical mediocrity.

Two Legends (2006-12-03)

This is a very good cd from two legends , it almost makes up for Erics last disapointing effort (I played it once), of the 14 songs I think about 7 are very good and that is better than most recordings gets now days , listen to"its easy" pure vintage cale and with the top notch musicians on this album and JJ writing most songs its a good listen , Do it again soon boys.

Too slick . . (2006-11-17)

Some fine tunes but too slick and over-produced for my liking.
