For years, fans of Neil Young and Crazy Horse have been waiting for an official chance to hear Crazy Horse live with original leader Danny Whitten, the insanely talented guitarist who died of a heroin overdose in late 1972, inspiring Tonight's the Night. Tuned-in fans have been awaiting this very set for at least a dozen years, as it was originally to be tacked onto the end of a Decade-style triple CD of outtakes. Thankfully, this well-recorded live set from the infamous Fillmore East was well worth the wait. Here are scorching, extended takes of "Down by the River," "Winterlong," and "Cowgirl in the Sand," each propelled by guitar interplay so delightful you have to keep rewinding to hear it again. In fact, bits of it seem to prefigure the ways that Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine would feed off each other in the band Television, only with less of a sweet edge. But the world doesn't need any more arguments that Young was a proto-punk; what the world does need is at least a dozen more releases from Neil's archives! And hopefully, with this awesome live album, the floodgates have truly been opened and there are many more to come, in the vein of Dylan's Bootleg series. This disc is worth it alone for the version of "Wondering," a tune not officially recorded until many years later in Neil's weird '80s rockabilly phase. --Mike McGonigal

Good early Neil live. (2007-01-09)

Many reviews I've seen complain about the fact that the entire show of the Fillmore is not on this cd. Well, I'd say what we have here is better than nothing considering the low output of live Neil from the early years. The sound on this cd is good and very enjoyable. The set is entirely electric with the original Crazy Horse line-up. Among the songs, we have a good version of Winterlong, which had not been released on a studio album and an unreleased song, Wonderin', a song with a country feel. Nothing exceptionnal, but it's always fine to get the unreleased songs Neil did live only. The real treats on this disc are Down by the river and one of the best versions of Cowgirl in the sand. It is saying much considering the studio version and Red Rocks version are high standards by themselves.I chose not to purchase the dvd edition because from what I saw on Neil's website, it is a photo montage and not a video of the performance. The only downside to this excellent cd is the cheap cardboard box. A friend of mine and I have a hard time releasing the cd from our sleeve.Overall, a very welcome entry in the Neil Archives. Keep'em coming!

neil young is amazing (2006-10-31)

I havn't even heard this yet but have been excited for it to land since I heard about it a few months ago. I have many other NY live albums but will still get this.
