BT's This Binary Universe is really a follow-up to his 2004 soundtrack to Monster, a brilliant work of cinematic moods and ambient Americana. It was unjustly ignored by both the Oscars and the Grammys, where it should have at least been nominated for Best Surround Sound Recording. None of that has stopped Brian Transeau from going further down this path of expansive ambient electronica that takes him out of the techno-pop and trance direction he had been pursuing. This Binary Universe taps into BT's classical side, with expansive arrangements and intricate, albeit minimalist, thematic development. From the opening of "All That Makes Us Human Continues," BT reveals himself as a master of Eno-esque melancholy, as simple melodies evolve through an electro-orchestral instrumental palette. Lounge jazz with solos in the key of abstract, plaintive arpeggiated guitars, electro marches, minimalist hymns, and pastoral dreamscapes drive an album that seeks out joy and redemption, but not without traveling through the dark. The last track, "Good Morning Kaia," is a paean to his newborn daughter, and the most purely anthemic track on the disc.I suspect the real raison d'ĂȘtre of This Binary Universe is the accompanying 5:1 surround DVD. BT creates an immersive space that's less sonic pinball and more audio sculpture, often revealing different aspects of his music than in the stereo mix. Each song on the DVD has a unique video that includes antique robots, surreal landscape drawings, live action fantasies, and abstract designs. It's the best way to experience this music, but whether you watch the DVD or tune into the stereo CD, This Binary Universe may be the first ambient symphony of the 21st century. --John Diliberto

An artistic exploration, pushing the limit of sonic possibilities (2007-06-26) My first introduction to the music of BT was in the movie Monster, and having enjoyed the scoring, and the accompanying documentary that explored his techniques, was prompted to buy this album on it's release. I went straight to the 5.1 DVD version, by-passing the CD, wanting to see and hear the whole album as it was meant to be enjoyed. Each song begins with a subtle keyboard lullaby, with gradual layering and chaotic glitch interjections, amassing to explosive orchestral ensemble pieces. Truly, each song becomes a triumph in it's own right, with most of the tracks refelecting a classical temperment, with huge sounding string and brass sections bursting about. After my first viewing, I couldn't stop putting on the DVD whenever someone came over, wanting them to experience such a beautiful audio/visual composition. His final song (a tribute to his daughter Kaya) is amazing, and an inspiration for parents out there who have tonnes of video footage of their kids but don't know what to do with it. In BT's case, he wrote a beautiful piece of music to which he edited his reels of footage. The other pieces are just as satisfying, there are parts of some of the songs I can't wait for, the crip sound of strumming guitars in one instance, and a cool jazz drum in 7/8 time in another. Highly, highly recommended, if not for the actual listening pleasure derived from BT's compositions, then at least for the opportunity to test out your home theatre with some incredibly well produced 5.1 Digital Audio accompanied by spectacular and unique computer animation.
A Creative Masterpiece (2006-11-06) While technically spectacular, many will find that in this BT album, the use of different styles, weird instruments and over-the-top sound manipulation makes it very difficult to access. Musical themes are very "classical", but the constant variations and layers upon layers of distortions require even an attentive listener multiple plays of the album before being able to extract most of it.And, given all of this, "This Binary Universe", through its innovative use of DTS surround sound and the many contributors for the DVD video animations, is clearly one of the most innovative and creative electronic album made in recent years. It does so by somehow making highly experimental electronic music blend into a form that's accessible, and could well prove to be influential enough to push both classical and electronic music styles to re-define and rediscover themselves. It is the first electronic album (of any style, even "dance") that I found that most of my friends were able to listen through without outright dismissing it. Even though most of them couldn't "get" it, they were able to get the music's themes, emotions and storylines. That's what makes it BT's masterpiece, and hopefully an indication that his next albums will be just as bold and creative.
Absolutely amazing music from a talented musician (2006-08-30) This is NOT leftover music from the score to the film Monster, if you think that you're not very astute. That's like saying Beethoven symphony No. 5 is the same thing as his symphony No. 9 You've got no ears, you shouldn't be listening to music. BT is perhaps the most original and foremost electronic artist and musician in the world today hands down. Not only has he created a masterwork that anyone, even non-electronica fans can enjoy, but he has set the bar so high that his only competitor is now himself. This Binary Universe stirs the emotions, brings one to the heights of ecstasy and to the depth of sorrow and ends with a joyous ode to his daughter Kaia. It is a triumphant wonder. Every cd, every piece of music that BT has put out has been about growing as an artist, about evolving, not stagnating and repeating himself. If you like your artists to just repeat their previous efforts over and over again then BT is not the artist for you, but if you want someone who changes and evolves and challenges you, the listener, to do the same then BT is the man and This Binary Universe is the next step.
One of BT 's Best album yet (2006-08-25) I had a chance to listen to the cd before it was released to the public. This is basicaly the left over from the soundtrack Monster.I should say that this album definitely shows BT 's talent and the fans will not be disappointed. The cd itself contains DVD clips of the soundtrack itself inwhich is very unique
