Brilliant return for N'Dea (2006-09-21)
5
The Brand New Heavies were one of (if not the most) important bands in the early 90s, especially when talking about Acid Jazz (although they originally started on the Cooltempo label). Any true BNH fan appreciates their instrumental talent, but man if N'Dea Davenport wasn't the best vocalist they ever could have found. No disrespect to Siedah Garrett, who has some good chops, but she just doesn't have the same feel as N'Dea. Anyway, with N'Dea coming back to BNH, it's like she never left. The best thing about her vocals is that she knows when to pull back and when to push forward, which sounds trite, but honestly, listen to somebody like Whitney Houston, who only has one direction (straight forward-from-the-gut) and you'll know what I mean. As for the band, I don't know if there is a slicker and tighter band around (listen to Simon on early Jamiroquai stuff and you'll see what I mean). The solo projects were good (Akimbo was great stuff...and seeing N'Dea in Montreal at the Cabaret was a moment I'll never forget), but there's nothing like a Heavies album. Strong points: N'Dea on "Don't Know Why (I Love You)" and an infectious dance beat on "Let's Do It Again" (if you can stay still during this song, you're probably dead).Pick it up, it's the old Heavies with some new life back in them.
