Admit it: If you had to pick an artist to give voice to the wackadoo thinkings of a monkey beloved by most of the American populace over age 3, you could do a lot worse than Jack Johnson. Black Eyed Peas? Too hyper. Death Cab for Cutie? Too ironic. They Might Be Giants? Too eggheaded. Johnson, though the object of much rightful jealousy--here, after all, is a guy who only stumbled into music and vaulted himself up the charts after a successful career as a pro surfer--turns out to have the goods to do H.A. Rey, Curious George's creator, proud. Fans familiar with Johnson's earlier discs will recognize a certain laconic sprawl and easy fascination in his songs that suits the theme of perpetual puzzlement perfectly (here, let's not forget, is a guy who racked up fans with songs called "Bubble Toes" and "Banana Pancakes"). That the music takes a childish turn barely registers--songs like opener "Upside Down" are classic Johnson, all wonderment and groove, and the collaborations with friends Ben Harper, G. Love, and Matt Costa warm up, wink, and scamper off before packing on the weight of excess meaning. "We're Going to Be Friends," track seven, seals the deal--when you can make the White Stripes sound compatible with the Man with the Yellow Hat, you know you've got a multi-generational winner. --Tammy La Gorce

Great for the Kids or great for anyone (2008-06-12)

Out of all of Jack Johnson's CD's Curious George is my second favourite (first would be In Between Dreams). This album is very kid-friendly, a great CD to put on in the car for a trip. I would also recommend it for any Jack Johnson fan as well. On the first listen there are a songs that pop out right away like Upside Down, 3 R's, We're Going to be Friends. The rest of the songs may take several listens to grow on you. For me, Broken is a stand-out track among the songs that need time to "grow on you", because of the smooth guitar work.Again Jack Johnson doesn't disappoint with his catchy melodies, nice guitar riffs, and easy-going songs.

This CD made me feel happy but... I got bored of couple of songs easily. The music, the guitar, the singer are good, relaxing at time, and made me feel positive for a long time compare to other CDs'. I think kids would not get boreded easily by Jack's songs but that's my opinion. An easy listening CD as I say. Got an headache? Listen to it. It will be gone in not even 5 minutes. Relax!
Springtime set to music. (2006-03-22)

Maybe it's just the fact that springtime is starting to make itself present up here in northern Canada, but there is something about the soundtrack of "Curious George" that seems to bring sunshine and warmth to my days, a little bit more with each new listening.

This album is a warm, lovely and soothing collection of acoustic-based songs. The lyrics are simple (but not simplistic), the melodies are catchy and memorable, and the arrangements are beautifully understated, leaving plenty of room for Johnson's relaxed and earthy voice. Jack Johnson stays pretty true to the many qualities that have turned him into some sort of a cult figure in recent years, and was the perfect choice to score one of the best kids movies made in recent years.

What I love the most about this soundtrack is that unlike more typical soundtracks to kids' movies (think of most of the post-Beauty and the Beast Disney soundtracks), it avoids the bombastic, Broadway-musical approach. Forget the ultra-wordy, falsely dramatic, sacharine-loaded production tricks that litter too many kids movies these days; what you get here is songs that your kids will enjoy, and that you (as an adult) will have a great time listening to. There is something uplifting and positive, in a smooth way, about songs such as "Upside down", "Talk of the town" (my personal favourite), "Lullabye", "Broken" and "We're going to be friends".

Either way, don't be turned off by the fact that this music is featured in a children's movie. This album sits beautifully amongst the discography of Jack Johnson, and will serve as a fantastic introduction to his music for many people.

Doing what he does best.... (2006-02-13)

This soundtrack is done really well by Jack and his friends. The new singles are upbeat, and the re-working of old songs are quite good too. Jack joins Matt Costa on his "Lullaby' with the ukelele, to create one of the strongest tracks on the CD. Close friend Ben Harper also offers his "With My Own Two Hands" to the album. Overall, very pleasing release from Brushfire Records.
JJ and friends go 'kiddy' (2006-02-09)

This album recently recorded by Jack Johnson and Friends is a pretty good CD. It has a lot of elements found in most of his other CDs - his laid-back approach with acoustic guitar and easy listening. However, this one features a few songs such as the "3 R's" which emphasizes the importance of recycling for kids. Overall this CD is another one of Jack's awesome CDs but be aware that it was made for the "Curious George" Soundtrack and has numerous "kid-inspired" songs that display a good message.I don't suggest you bring the whole CD along with you and your buddies on the way to the beach to surf; instead bring only the first 3-4 songs, which are the best on the album.
