Blues guitarist Colin James has clearly forged a niche for himself in the Canadian landscape. With 10 CDs released, six Junos won, and a million records sold, James is virtually the voice of bluesy pop in the great white north. The Regina-born musician first made a name for himself as a Stevie Ray Vaughan-inspired blues guitarist; James' self-titled disc in 1988 earned immediate attention by including "Voodoo Thing" and "Why'd You Lie," especially impressive for a debut release. Since then, James has recorded everything from big band sounds and rock to a collection of rare Delta blues. His new CD, Limelight, may not have one overriding theme, but it is unquestionably infused with a love of soul. As a result, James' vocals shine brighter than on many previous works, most notably the sexy highlight "Healing Time" and the country-folk candor of "On My Way Back to You," charming in its under-produced style. There are four cover tunes on the disc, including two Van Morrison tracks ("Into The Mystic" and "It Fills You Up"), one by Nick Lowe ("When I Write Yhe Book"), and Bob Dylan's classic "Watchin' The River Flow." The covers are pleasant, but with such incredible originals already out there, their inclusion takes away from James's own strong songwriting talents. That said, the early Van Morrison feel throughout much of the disc (particularly in the title track) is a great fit, making this soulful record a welcome addition to any Colin-lover's collection. --Denise Sheppard

Canada's Best Kept Secret (2006-09-22)

This guy is simply one of Canada's national treasures. He gets better with each album and never seems to compromise his artistic integrity for the sake of a buck. Could he put out more commercial albums and cash in? Sure. Instead, he continues to make the kind of music that he loves, and let me tell you, it shows. Like someone who's diverse? Colin James is your guy. He comfortably moves from Rock and Roll, to Blues, to Swing/Big Band, to quietly powerful acoustic numbers. Is there nothing this guy can't do? If you haven't checked Colin James out, do yourself a favor, buy this album. If you bought some of his early stuff and haven't heard some of his recent stuff, it's time to revisit Mr. James. He has a few new tricks up his sleeve. Oh, by the way, his next album (which is the third in his Little Big Band series) comes out Oct. 3. The first single is fantastic. It's called "If You Need Me". You can listen to it on his official site. Once you hear it, I'm sure you'll be placing your order immediately following. Buy it now, thank me later.
Not what I was expecting... (2006-03-20)

First of all I want to say that I am a fan of Colin James after having bought 2 great albums of his - Bad habits (exceptionally good) and traveler (also great)- and I was therefore surprised when I bought this to find that I didn't like it.

First of all I found this album boring with little in the way of diversity and none of the great songwriting that he put out with some of his other albums i.e the 2 previously mentioned.

My advice is to start any Colin James collection with Bad Habits and go on from there. According to many reviews everyone else seems to ike it yet I just couldn't and wouldn'y recommend this to anyone else unless they were a die-hard Colin James fan.

Another great CD from James! (2005-11-29)

I have all of Colin Jame's cd's and this is one of his best yet! I love that he still plays small towns in Canada. Colin is one of our very best no matter how much international recognition he gets!

A thoroughly enjoyable cd with some great songwriting by Colin and some great covers of Dylan, Van Morrison and Nick Lowe . I have a few cd's from his catalogue and have always had an interest in his music but when I heard a few of these tunes on a radio station I was floored . I had to go straight to the store to pick it up. It is such a mystery how a Canadian talent like this isn't huge in the States with his blues and gospel influences and yet our exports of Celine and Shania seem to be raking in trillions of dollars with their pretencious drivel . This is probably the most enjoyable cd of his so far . BUY IT !!!!
Spreading the word internationally (2005-09-23)

As a New Zealander I feel duty bound to tell everyone I come in contact with about this SUPERB album. Having been a fan for over 14 years, Colin just keeps getting better and better. It would be a crime for this album not to get more exposure internationally.Every song is a gem. I do believe that word of mouth will sell this album by the truckload. All the more satisfying for an artist I would believe as it will be the sheer quality of the music that will have this album flying off the shelves.BUY IT and tell all your friends about it. They wont be disappointed.
