Hedley!!! (2006-06-29)

I love this Cd. All the songs are very good. Hedley is one of my favorite groups on stage. They have a lot of energy (the singer moves exactly like in their video for the song On my Own) and their music is awesome. If you like Simple Plan you gonna like Hedley(it's the same kind of music). My favorite songs on this Cd are: Villain,On my own,Trip,Johnny Falls,Sugar Free...

Most of the bad reviews here are from people who have not heard the full album. Pathetic. I don't like Simple Plan, but I'm not going to write bad reviews about Hedley just because they're touring together. They're promoting their new album and Simple Plan concerts are usually packed, so it was a good move.

As for the album, my favourite song is "321". I really should've been the 2nd single, "Trip" is such a bad song!

Pretty good (2006-04-01)

Well I actually just bought this cd about a week ago and I love it! I've listened to it for about 2 hours each day so far. Most people bash them for "trying to sound like Billy Talent" but I wouldn't say that at all. You've probably heard songs like "On My Own" and "Trip" on the radio before but in my opinion there are better songs than those on this cd. Songs like "321", "Saturday" and "Johnny Falls". But Pretty much every song on this cd is good except for "Gunnin'". It's worth the $15 or whatever it costs I forget.

This CD is one of my favourites. I love them. I voted for Jakcob on Canadain idol and instead Kalan One. I was very surprised with this CD, My favourites are Gunnin, Saturday, and Johnny Falls. If you have never seen them live, it's worth seeing them. I saw them with Simple Plan and they were CRAZY. Jake wore a Girls Medium tee-shirt that was pink and Pink and yellow swimming trunks. This CD is worth every penny.
Definitely not 'On Their Own'.. Simple Plan has their backs (2006-03-03)

I can't believe the overall rating this CD is getting. I listen to as much music as I can, and this was recommended to me by a friend as a "challenge," in a way. I was supposed to be surprised by how much I was going to like it - nothing could be further from the truth. This CD is absolutely perfect for anyone who's happy with status-quo pop-"punk". There's the perfectly predictable mix of up-tempo "energetic" songs with weak rhythmless power chords and strained crooning, and the minor-key "heart wrenching" garbage that could very easily be fronted by Avril Lavigne (laughably, she would probably add more dimension to it). The guitar, bass, and drums are so anemic and rigid, this is the only sentence I'll devote to them: they're embarrassing. I was supposed to especially be surprised at Jacob Hoggard's "beautiful voice." What I found was something completely average - there is literally nothing special about it. He doesn't have the soulful power and reverb-soaked sustain of Cedric Bixler-Zavala. He doesn't even come close to the range of Jeff Buckley. He doesn't have the haunting depth of Jeff Martin. It's a shrill, nasal, boring sound with no dynamics - nothing but singing in tune. His lyrics are terrible - clichéd, oftentimes rhyming words with themselves, or using schemes where the suffix of every phrase rhymes with every other phrase in the same verse (or, in the case of "On My Own," nearly the whole song). It's essentially the singer from Billy Talent's tone, minus the heart. Even Jacob's stage act is a rip-off of Ben's - although he then adds some ridiculous chicken-dance to it, where he proceeds to stick his ass out. Yeah, nice "energy." If you want to hear good examples of Canadian singing, listen to the haunting softness of David Usher, or the three-dimensional baritenor of Matthew Good, or nearly anyone who has ever sang on Broken Social Scene's albums. You'll also find excellent lyrics behind the melody. This album is completely transposeable with Simple Plan and their boring, sickly ilk.

Saying this album is a five-star effort is like saying a Dr. Seuss book is an insightful metaphor for the socioeconomic class struggle.. or that Jerry Bruckheimer movies could be decomposed into great literature.. or that Carrot Top's humour has more depth than Peter Sellers' and Andy Kaufman's combined. If you're a forty-something year old data systems manager looking for something to dance to in your cubicle, or a thirteen year old who thinks the end of the world is being grounded, give this CD a spin. If you want to find music that does more than stand in the shadow of other pop acts, I'm sure you could find better just by going to a local club.
