With an impressive total of 10 Blue Rodeo studio recordings and five Juno awards in 20 years, Canada's most consistent country-pop kings have stuck to what they do well on Are You Ready: making toe-tappin' music that fans of torch and twang will welcome with open arms. The disc's kickoff track, "Can't Help Wondering Why" is a three-minute, sunshine-y joyride that leads straight into the rockabilly-riffs of the Orbison-esque number "Are You Ready?" Near the end of the CD, however, the exact opposite emotion is evoked. "Tired of Pretending" brings Keelor's full-frontal passion to the surface, the result is a compelling, gut-busting rant about apathy, where the co-frontman screams out "I'm tired of pretending that I still care."

Rockabilly pokes its head out on more than one occasion; a strong Celtic influence bleeds through as well, courtesy of Keelor's "Phaedra's Meadow" which features the legendary Paddy Moloney from the Chieftains on the Aeolian pipes and flute. The song's sparse, spooky opening verse proves to be the disc's highlight, a musical moment in time that is neither country, nor pop, but shows that the boys of Blue Rodeo continue to take inspiration from a host of styles, ultimately making their own rich, warm musical mélée.--Denise Sheppard

Refreshing (2006-01-30)

It is. It is refreshing to buy a cd, pop it into whatever player you choose, and just let it play. I have stopped buying cd's at different times because cd's offered one or two enjoyable songs and... nothing else! Or worse!I was driving, the first song playing, and I told myself that when it was done I would hit repeat and listen to it again. I didn't quite catch it when the song ended and the next song started, and, enjoying the second song as much as the first, I decided to hit repeat on both... a little later I was promising myself to hit repeat on the first six songs! One other thing. Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor take turns being the primary singer, a pattern they've used on previous albums. Only, I still remember a number of great songs they sang together on, thier voices work well together, but you won't get much of that on this album. It doesn't hurt the cd, I had repeated listenings before missing it.BYW, I live near the Sleeping Giant mentioned in one of the songs.
These guys never make a bad album (2005-10-24)

Another great album from a solid country/rock/folk band. Great contrasting vocal styles between Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor yet they blend well together, especially live. Like the Stones have on their albums, Blue Rodeo makes great use of the horns on this album. I just saw them touring this album but unfortunately the horn section was left out of the live show. Still put on a great show and played lots of stuff from the new CD. Get this album and give it a couple of listens. You won't be disappointed. Solid from start to finish.I give it 4 out of 5 stars, after all it's not Five Days or Outskirts, but stands well on it's own.
excellent work (2005-05-28)

Blue Rodeo has produced another masterful CD. I find the themes similar to the 5 day in July CD. My favourite cuts are Rena, Up on a Cloud, and Finger Lakes, although Beverly Street and Phaedra's Meadow are also excellent. From reading BR's web site discussions, it is apparent that everybody loves different tunes from this CD - to me a sign that there is nary a poor song on the CD. Rena and Up on a Cloud were also featured on BR's Christmas DVD release (Burning Snowman), although they were played differently. I prefer the Rena on the DVD and the Up on a Cloud from the CD. All four cuts are really good though.

These guys continue to produce wonderful music. Buy it - you'll be happy you did.

Just plain good. (2005-05-01)

I just want to start off by saying that this is a real good cd. With all of the crap out there nowadays, it is really refreshing that these boys, together over twenty years, are still able to create songs that are both fresh and exciting yet carry just a hint of yesteryears glory.

Do not compare this cd with their past works, I just don't find that to be productive. Take it for what it is. Part pop, country rock with a little injection of Greg's growl, which I love. I like the less polished and pretty feel of this one.

Though I enjoy the whole cd and find it blends very well, the 3 songs I find myself repeating most are Rena, Tired of Pretending and Don't Get Angry. Tired of Pretending being my favorite. Pulled at my heart and kicked me in the stomach the first time I heard it.

So whether you are a big BR fan or have never heard of them before (impossible), I suggest picking this one up instead of that JET or GOOD CHARLOTTE cd in your other hand.

These lads can do no wrong (2005-04-16)

My first listen-to was while I was doing some work at my computer. Nothing jumped out and grabbed me (OK, "Five Days in July is my favourite of the other 8 albums of theirs I own; I have favourite songs on every one) and my colleague, another major fan agreed with me. HOWEVER, I played the album through at home, earphones from my CD player firmly plugged into my ears, twice without pause. Oh, the melodies, the harmonies, the arrangements...now they ARE jumping out and grabbing me. I wasn't paying attention before, but I am now, and this ablum really demands, and deserves, attention. I particularly liked "Rena" and "Phaedra's Meadow"; in "Tired of Pretending" these phrases from the last verse caught me in a very vulnerable mood: "...and the smoke curls like a river/to some forgotten land/floating abandoned the mystery concealed/like the moonlit shadows/on a snow covered field/where the wind knows no mercy". First the listening, then the discovering. A polished set, showcasing the maturing sensibilities of a highly talented group of musicians who, by now, know they have nothing to prove but, apparently, have an unending wealth to share. Lucky us.
