Mix one part Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, a dash of Tom Petty, and add a little Sam Roberts to get just a sense of what Matt Mays & El Torpedo have to bring to your ears. Countryfied rock straight outta Nova Scotia, the group's sound is both timeless and, to a certain degree, timely as well. With the success of Sarah Harmer, Ron Sexsmith and the aforementioned Roberts, acoustic guitars, warm vocals and strong south-inflected melodies still hold a high place on the Canadian charts.
There are many solid, driving-down-the-dusty-road-in-an-old-convertible tracks on this disc; producer Don Smith (Tom Petty, U2, Bob Dylan) knows how to give the band an open field and the space to cruise through it. The track "What Are We Gonna Do Come the Month of September" is a perfect example with its wonderfully expansive Hammond organ-infused groove. The seven-minute-plus track, peaking with a two minute, perfectly languid exit, allows the players their chance to express a mood, and the audience their chance to feel it, without being rushed by the confines of pop's three-minute radio rule. Toronto's Now Magazine recently named Mays "Canada's most promising roots rock tunesmith," admittedly, the amazingly-talented Kathleen Edwards is also very deserving of that title, but as symmetry would have it, she joins Mays as co-vocalist on "The Plan", adding extra oomph to a track that deserves to be an outside-the-box radio hit this summertime. --Denise Sheppard
Customer Reviews
Amazing! (2008-09-15) From start to finish this CD is simply superb. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who likes rock music. There is a definite Tom Petty & Neil Young feel to this CD, but it is still original sounding.
Wicked come Matt Mays and El Torpedo (2006-08-24) It seems a little unfair to compare a new band to some of rock and roll (and gator rock's) legends . . . but one can't help but make the well-deserved comparison here. Neil Young, Crosby Stills and Nash, Tom Petty all infused with a distinct feeling of Canadiana best describe the sound of Matt May's 2nd album. But there is something else to the sound, an almost intangible quality that can't be describe by quoted rock legends past and present. Something that may very well have been lacking from similar releases from similar artists in the past ten years. There is an effortlessness to the textured soundscape here that can only be attributed to true talent and well put-to-use influence. Instead of recreating a mish-mash of sounds made comfortable to the ear by over 40 years of listener-ship, Matt Mays and company have managed to craft a wholly unique sound reminiscent of past greats without simply becoming a tribute to them. This may be the greatest compliment paid to bands of this type (Sam Roberts, The Novaks, etc) because the only fault attributed to these bands can be best described as 'a refreshing burst of indie rock unoriginality.' Road trip rock may be the freshest sound coming out of the east coast of Canada these days and Matt Mays and El Torpedo have proven with their second release that they are unquestionably at the top of the pack in their (albeit small) genre. Keep a close eye on these guys, you'll be hearing their name more and more as the years go on.
So good you wont believe it's 21st century (2006-04-29) What can I say about this band there amazing they captured the esence of classic rock without being cleche which I thought I would never see in my generation. The music is fantastic these guys are full of talent sprit and soul. Final words buy this album right now if your any sort of rock fan you will not be disaponted also pick up his first one it's good to more folkey then this one but just as great.
Unique Sound; Unlike Anything I've Heard Recently (2005-11-12) Matt Mays' second album (his first with El Torpedo) is by far the most consistant album I have heard all year. This band is the real deal, and I truly believe this album has the potential to become one of the great modern classics. Matt Mays' wonderfully gritty vocals can only be described as a smoother "Tom Petty-esque" sound. This entire album has the roots of raw southern rock (such as Skynyrd) but with a 21st century flair. Each track enthralls me. Particularly, "Travellin'" and the haunting "What Are We Gonna Do Come The Month Of September?". Its hard to describe the sheer uniqueness of this group. Any possible chance you get, I would recommend to check out their live show. It's jaw-dropping.Describe in two words "Matt Mays + El Torpedo" is "raw" and "rockin'".If at all possible, listen to some of their sample music, and buy this album. An evening with Matt Mays + El Torpedo is always an evening to remember.
See them live. (2005-06-24) A very strong follow-up album. The first track is still my favourite but there are gems throughout the disc. However, the real treat is seeing the band live. They tore the roof off of Lee's palace in June and are a must-see. Yet another great band from Halifax-Dartmouth.
