Customer Reviews
epic (2004-07-14) Given the recent reunion and the fact that a whole new generation is being turned on to the brilliance of this band, it makes complete sense to have released this expansive and mind-blowing collection. Yes, die hard fans probably have a lot of this stuff already; but this is a definitive collection for those who want it all and want it now!
A ridiculous waste of money (2004-07-01) The potential of box sets to draw in a naive fan to buying unnecessary compilations like this is a serious threat. There are hardly any bsides or bonus tracks like those on the reissues, and material from Sad Wings of Destiny is scarce and nearly nonexistent (you would think that with all the money Priest could just buy out Gull records by now). Packaging like this is cynical and manipulative, and if you're already a hardcore fan, unneccesary obviously. The Iron Maiden box set was at least unreleased live material (however repetitious much of it was as far as track listings), and the only draw of this one is the SFV tour live dvd, which was previously available only bootleg. Skip this unless you have the money AND are a newcomer.
HOW COULD YOU GO WRONG? (2004-06-26) Just brilliant from the eighties studded belt surround to the gloriousness of the Priest's musical legacy this is a triumph hands down. I didn't think that Metal Works could be topped but they did it.I've read some reviews that critise the packaging but I think it is way cool and it doesn't feel like its going to fall apart anytime soon. The booklet is simplistic and perhaps could have included more input from band members but is fine just to flick through as you listen to the music. Remastered and jaw droppingly so, it is the music that fills this man's heart with the kind of lift that metal did the first time I heard it. Four CD'S worth of power and passion but with the right mix of light and shade. Sure there were some down points in their back catalogue but when you place all the best moments together it comes as no suprise that they can fill four lengthy cds with out an ounce of filler. Highlights are abundant but try 'Blood Red Skies' and 'Out In The Cold' from the patchy late eighties era to the lets show them 'Painkiller' opus containing 'A Touch of Evil'. The experimentation of 'The Rage' to the balls to the walls of 'Freewheel Burning' back to the space and time feel of 'Desert Plains' you wont be disappointed. Truely the ultimate metal band of all time this box set is a testament of greatness. The bonus DVD gives you a quick reminder that if you thought they were great on record they were better still live. Heavy metal that is what we want and with the Priest now reborn and back it is what we will get! Use the last of your credit card limit to buy if necessary.
Primarily the Halford years and better for it (2004-06-17) I enjoy everything about this box set.The music of JUDAS PRIEST's METALOGY offers enough variety in their signature sound to allow for a listening "session" longer than just one cd's worth. The sequence of tracks moves through slow to breakneck recordings of their best loved album hits, with live unreleased and cover tunes interspersed (a heavy metal rendition of Joan Baez's 'Diamonds and Rust'(!) as well as Fleetwood Mac's 'The Green Manalishi of the Two-Pronged Crown' originally strummed by Peter Green) helping to keep the sameness factor at bay. I only gave this box 4 stars because the 5th disc is DVD and I don't have a DVD player. From what most reviewers have indicated, the DVD will most likely give this a 5 star once I see it.This is the only JP in my collection now and it fulfills all my needs on this group. If you're into the NWOBHM scene and want something all inclusive of the particular impact this kindof music made...and why...just listen. Also, the booklet included is well thought out and really helps illustrate why JP was as influential as it was.
Proud Of The Metal!!!! (2004-06-16) I never was a huge JP fan. They were placed below Iron Maiden, KISS and Black Sabbath on my Heavy metal list, but after listening to the music and watching the dvd I suddenly remembered how cool these guys are! The dvd in particular is mind blowing, showing how tight the band is and putting to rest the debate on who the greatest metal front man is, Rob Halford - hands down. When he does the robot walk in "Metal Gods" the 38 year old me laughed out loud but the 16 year old metal head inside me thought is was freakin' cool! I was at the show in Dallas on this same tour and remembering it was the greatest!I have no complaints about the music selection. The entire Turbo album sucks and Defenders Of The Faith was underrated. The book that comes with the package is beautiful to look at and informative (much better than that lame Behind The Music episode that VH-1 slapped together). My only complaint is the horrible packaging. I was totally disappointed in it. I would have gladly paid ten bucks extra to get a nice package, like the excellent KISS box set.So all you 35 to 45 year old metal heads with disposable incomes go out and buy this. You will not be dissapointed. And to all you young metallers, get this and see where it all came together and made the "pre-Poison" eighty metal scene so glorious.
