I LOVE the music from lord of the rings, and I don't see why they don't sell the 3 cd's together anymore. Besides, this one supposedly came with collector's items. Please, please, please re-release this so we don't have to buy three overpriced CDS!!!
I'm sure it's great...but... (2004-06-23)

I'd love to say this CD set is the favorite in my collection.I'd love to comment on the depth and breadth of the artisticmusical composition and performance.

But I can't...I've been waiting for my order since the 13th ofMarch and it's still not here. Amazon continues sending me these pleasant little e-mails every couple weeks, letting meknow that in just 2 more weeks I should expect my CDs to arrive.

I'm still waiting, and it's been over 3 months. If you havethese CDs, please enjoy them for me. Oh, and you'll probably note that this page still indicates that the product ships in 1-2 days. No change there since the day I placed my order.

The best score ever created. Impossible to match (2004-06-07)

This score has wonderful mixture of all the types of musical dynamics every decent epic should incorperate. Haunting, dramatic, horrorfying, magical, comical, beautiful, emotional, bittersweet, I won't continue (unless you would like me to take up all my thousand word limit). Firstly, I would just like to say a massive thankyou to Howard Shore for this truly beautiful masterpiece. I never tire of the pureness of this music, because it is just so emotional and beautiful. Throughout the 3 brilliant soundtracks, the music itself takes you on a journey.

Ok, enough of the mushy stuff (at least for now)!

The first Soundtrack covers the main pieces featured in "The Fellowship of the Ring". This score won the 2001 oscar for Best Original Score. It represents the lighter stories of the film, including the fun at The Shire ("Concerning Hobbits"), and the havens of Rivendell("Many Meetings", "Council of Elrond"). However it also plays some serious notes, describing the Fellowship's quest, and then the music becomes furious as it conveys Saraman and his blood-oozing orcs. The CD includes two stunning ballads by Enya ("Aniron", "May it Be"), who's music has always been closely related to Tolkien. In this you run the risk of sheading a few tears with some emotional twists in pieces including "The Bridge of Kazad-dum" and "The Breaking of the Fellowship", two of my favourite tracks.

The soundtrack for "The Two Towers" takes on a far more serious tone. At this point of the film, all the characters of the film find themselves in hopeless situations, and must rely on friendship, fellowship, and faith to guide them through the darkening days. There is a true element of heroism in this score and is very, very inspiring. Pieces in this fashion include "Forth Eorlingas", "Isengard Unleashed", and one of the gems of this soundtrack, "Samwise the Brave". However, my all-time favourite piece of this CD, and one of my favourites of the entire thing is "Evenstar" a swooning ballad, who's lyrics are in Elvish (much like many of the Choral instalments). To conclude the CD, is a haunting song called "Gollum's Song" which has a very unique melody. At first you feel slightly repelled by the piece, but after a listen or two it begins to grow on you. It's an amazing song with powerful lyrics.

And finally there is the "Return of the King", which received 2003's Oscars for Origianl Score, and Best Song. Here, the movie and music wraps up to an electrifying finale. Here, everything could go according to plan, or go disasterously wrong and the fall of all good would be swift and devastating. This is my favourite of the three as it is by far the most emotional. There are ALOT of tear jerkers in this one, including "The Black Gate Opens", a stunning peace depicting Frodo and Sam's crippling struggle up Mount Doom; "Twilight and Shadow", a fantastic piece which describes the emotions of the elf Arwen, and "The Grey Havens" which is a bittersweet, simply moving track, which would have to be one of favourite ultimate favourites of the entire thing. The best track on the CD is "The Return of the King" (fits doesnt it! :). Here, Shore, constructs a piece of music incorperating most of the differnt music themes of the trilogy: the "Fellowship" theme, the theme for "Gondor", beautiful choral themes of the Elves, and the loving melodies of the hobbits. It's a beautiful way to wrap up what has been a wonderful, legenderay and undoubtably heartwrenching adventure each character (and the audience of "Lord of the Rings") has been on these past three years. It features the flautest Sir James Galway and the singer Renee Fleming. The moving song by Annie Lennox called "Into the West" is a perfect ending to the 56-track masterpiece. This deservingly won the Oscar for Best Song.

In conclusion (OW my fingers are so sore!), these 3 CD's are filled with the best music ever, ever composed and will be remembered for years to come. So much determination and passion has been put into these scores, making the movie experience all the more unforgetable. From heart-lifting to heart-breaking, winner of 3 oscars, the "Lord of the Rings" Soundtrack is by the best score ever created. IMPOSSIBLE TO MATCH! :)

The music is wonderful (2004-05-07)

(Amazon removes critism...) The music is wonderful. It does very in intensity. I increase volume for some of the quieter pieces then have to decrease volume for some of the louder pieces. It's best listened to in a quiet environment. Enya composed and performed a couple of the songs on the Fellowship CD - very nice. If you like the Rings music, you might also like the Best of Enya and Loreena McKennitt's The Book of Secrets.
Excellent Collection of Oscar Winning Material (2004-05-05)

Before The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, I never paid much attention to Howard Shore, but after I heard his excellent score, I started paying more attention. The Fellowship was the first of the Trilogy and as such, Shore established his themes for the landbreaking film. The music revolves around five basic themes: The theme for Isengard, the theme for the Black Riders/Mordor, the theme for the Fellowship, the theme for the Ring and the theme for The Shire. The range of music is extremely wide. The Black Rider theme is a very dark, gothic theme, while the Hobbit theme is very light and playful reminiscent of an old countryside folktune. The theme for Isengard is very strident percussion and brass with emphasize the evil building under Orthanc. The Fellowship theme is a very bold theme, only heard in its full glory 2 times on the soundtrack on tracks 11 and 13. The hints of most of these themes play in almost all the tracks of the film, however all of these tracks stand alone. Choir is used effectively to heighten the emotion of any particular track. The cd is over 70 minutes long, and I wish it could be longer simply because the music is so enjoyable. Shore's score to this epic film belongs on the top ten score's of all time and it truly deserved the Academy Award that it won. It is simply magnificent! The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers soundtrack is 1) an excellent score cd 2) a worthy companion to its predecessor the Academy Award winning The Fellowship of the Ring. Howard Shore returns to write the music for the next chapter of Jackson's films. The Two Towers has a mixture of new and old themes. Enya, a fixture on the Fellowship soundtrack is not featured on the Two Towers soundtrack. The Fellowship theme, the Isengard theme, the Rivendell theme, the Mordor theme, and the Shire theme all make reappearances, but added amongst them and comprising most of the cd are new themes. The Rohan theme is a very Vikingish theme replete with strings and percussion. Shore has the ability to vary the mood of this theme, usin it at the triumph of Theoden's reawakening as well as at the defeat of the evacuation of Meduseld. Treebeard's theme, is a very soft kind of "forresty" music with a chorus to give it a mysterious air. Shore uses heavy percussion to make the theme more effective. Arwen's theme is different from the first soundtrack, first because there is no Enya and second because its more of a melancholy love theme. Gollum's theme also doubles as the Ring theme from the first film, but the way Shore plays this theme reflects the 2 sides of Gollum's personality. As in the Fellowship, Shore uses different choirs very effectively, giving the elves an ethereal sounding choir, etc. The Two Towers is an excellent cd, and while it does not surpass the Fellowship of the Ring soundtrack it is its equal.

After hearing Howard Shore's stunning conclusion to Perter Jackson's epic Lord of the Rings trilogy, I can only state one thing: Excellent. Excellent doesn't really do justice to the magnificence of Shore's work. Shore presents a much more mature version of work. All our favorite themes are there: The Fellowship theme has now evolved into a wistful yet powerful fanfare for Aragorn. The Shire theme makes a return as does the Hobbit theme, both played magnificently by James Galway. Also returning is the Mordor theme, it's menacing notes now grown into a malevolent force. The Rohan theme also makes a brief reappearance, while the elvish theme comes to a full circle, representing Aragorn as he gets his sword in the track Andruil. The beginning of the cd is much more playful than that of the Two Towers, but it swiftly transforms into a majestic fanfare for Minas Tirith and Gondor which is among the greatest moments on the cd. Once again Enya does not sing on this cd, but in a suprisingly powerful decision, Billy Boyd aka Pippin does appear, singing briefly for Lord Denethor, capturing the rift between the Steward and Faramir. In track 17, The Return of the King, Shore takes a listener on a journey of all his developed themes for our heroes. Like his previous two Lord of the Ring scores, Shore writes so the listener see's. What I mean is that the music and the movie work so well together, that one actually envisions the beacons being lit at Minas Tirith or Eowyn swinging Merry unto her horse as the Rohirram ride out to Gondor. Faramir's deadly attack on Osgiliath and the appearance of Theoden at dawn come vividly to life, but most moving and most emotional is track 15, beginning with the Fellowship fanfare as Aragorn exorts his soldiers to fight and ending with a new theme as Sam picks up Frodo and says, "I can't carry It for you, but I can carry you!" It's enough to bring the listener to tears. As for Oscar-winning the song at the end by Annie Lennox, it captures triumph and tragedy of the conclusion of the Lord of the Rings. I was only disappointed by there not being more music to hear. I truly hope a complete soundtrack is released containing all the music from the films.
