Enjoyable and also disappointing (2004-08-11)
I have to agree about the disk restrictions of the Hoyle Table games. I wish that you didn't have to put the disk in to play it all the time. It seems that most games are going in this direction because they don't want people to copy the disks and pass it around to friends and family.
You can buy a good CD cleanning kit that contains a product that removes scratches. This can cost from $15-$30. It's important to keep your disks clean because I have noticed that it helps really well. Also to have a disk cleaner that cleans your Rom drive as that will also help you to maintain your game disk. I can agree with the post above as I have tried to use a virtual CD emulator and haven't been able to use it with this game. I don't know about all of them but the one I have used it doesn't seem to work with this game.
I have noticed that they took some of the previous Word and Board games to combine some of the games which they now call Table games 2004. I wish that they didn't change the part where you could play the games on your desk top without going in to full mode of the dos screen which takes over. I liked the choice to use either of those screens but now there's no option for that. Oh well no choice here.
If you can find previous Hoyle Games they used to have Card, Word, Board, Kid, and Casino. They have changed the names and re-arranged the games under newer titles so they have been reduced from 5 titles to 4 titles in the Hoyle Series. The Puzzle games doesn't have the talking characters in the game so it is not like the Card or Table games.
They have reduced their game titles and have cut back on some characters if you own previous versions of these games you will notice the changes they have made in more details. If you have the previous version of Word Games it isn't worth it to buy the puzzle games because it's as similar to those two previous games. Unless of course they have added some more Puzzles and you don't mind doing with out the talking voice.
I haven't tried the pool game and it looks like it's one of their older versions of pool. I wonder why they didn't give that game a face lift and make some changes to it? It would make it a little more inviting to play but I haven't played the pool game as of yet. It looks like an older version of their pool that was added to make this new game called Table Games which used to be called board games. I like some of the improvements such as the characters you can create with facemaker that can talk instead of looking like space cadets. They have introduced some new characters and they had made some improvements with the new characters that look a little more crisp and fresh then in the previous versions.
The only older character they gave a facelift to was Elayne. I will admit she does look a lot better with the new haircolor and makeup but her outfit is the same in the older version. Could she wear any thing other then black? No wardrobe change here. They kept the other ones the same...Harley, Rosewell, Capt. Scurvy, Jasper, and Marvin. It would have been nice if they would give their fans a say on which characters to keep and which ones would go but it seems like you don't have a say in the matter.
I miss a few of the older characters in the game that they had because they were more fun to play with. I wish that they would have kept them but I can see why they replaced them as a few of them hold some similarities. It seems that they replaced Ranger Robin with Chloe, Bart with Rhett and Jack, Ethel with Hedda.
Rhett has a few similarities to Maurice in some ways as the crazy side comes out of him. Jack entertains a little like Gax liked to do but it's not the same. A few of the characters appear to be much dryer with less balance. I find the newer characters can be much more meaner and nasty with a lot of sarcasm. I think I miss Gax more then I like Rosewell.
Also when you change your characters voice the other characters say the same thing so I find that part kind of repetitive. It would have been more interesting if they each had different responses to each of the character voices you use. I realize that you can turn off the responses which is a great choice but it would be great if they had some thing different to say.
What I really like about the game is when you are a way from your computer for a while sometimes they will announce the day Monday to Sunday when ever you play. I really like that new feature that they added to the game. I almost wonder if in future version if they will say the time, month and year in one sentence? This is a new feature or is it? Not sure but I didn't recognize it in the previous versions so it's new to me. Unless of course I had missed something?
The game does appear to be a little buggy. But for the most part I still enjoy playing it. It would be nice if they would have more choice of characters instead of discontinuing them so you could still play with them. It is not as buggy as some other games that I have tried playing and had to finally give up on. So there are a few bugs in the game but it's still playable for me.
The Hoyle bucks is really great so your can buy things for your characters. It would have been much nicer if they rewarded you more with Hoyle bucks if your game score is higher then your opposition in the games. It seems less of an incentive to play a game and get a dollar here or there. Could they have not at least recognized someone who made made a high score in the Word Yacht especially since it takes a long time to play. About 15-20 minutes per game at least for Word Yacht when you are playing with 4 characters.
Their reward system could be improved in that area a little more in my opinion. I like that idea because it gives you the incentive to play the games and give your character a treat. I just think that if you win a game you should get more hoyle bucks for winning the game and not in smaller amounts. That part I found disappointing. I found one way to get the hoyle bucks in the bump em car game.
You don't play with any one else and you can set each of your characters cars up on the turbo so that you create turbo with two of each of your characters cars and you try to bump them so they will go around and around till you knock out one of the cars. You play this till you have gotten at least enough hoyle bucks to buy the higher priced items. I tried this out and it worked like a charm. Mind you I would have liked it if they would give you more hoyle bucks then having to cheat this way.
In their list of buyables I have noticed that "Gold Fish" resembles the gold fish in tic tac toe the kid hoyle version (an older version.) At least they had made some use for that Gold fish. They reduced his size from being very big to very small. Pretty humbling for that little fish that a real sneak when you played tic tac toe with them in the kids version.
Especially when the fish had the advantage over you when playing tic tac toe. I am surprised that the fish is worth so much in hoyle bucks 3,200.00. A little much for just a little fish that jumps around and has been recycled in to the game. In the real world you would hardly pay that for a gold fish well at least this one will live for ever and you don't have to clean up it's mess or flush it down the toilet because it will never die on you.
Also if you have the older versions of Hoyle games like I have the "Board Games Version 5" and the "Word Games Version 2". If you put those games on your computer along with the newer versions you will get the some of the hair styles from the newer version that will work in your older game versions. It will not work the other way which was a little disappointing as I would have like to use the older version of styles. I don't know if this is a fluke but it has happened on my computer and I am using Windows XP. It may work on Windows 98 as well.
I have noticed with this game is that I have the card game 2004 and I can use this disk to play the card game and visa versa. I found that one to be really interesting. So I can use either disk to play both games. So I don't have to change disks. I can use the same disk and switch back and forth to either the card or table games. I found that part kind of interesting. I don't know if that will work for everyone but it has worked for me.
Now this has to be a fluke or something weird but it was a little interesting. I have noticed that if I wanted to take out the secondary character that I had created with face maker part way while playing a game. Then in my characters place I add one of the game characters. I have noticed with the spacemaker items will stay with the hoyle character until I exit from that game. It did look a little interesting.
Could this be another change they may have in mind down the road? This could be the wave of the future. Hoyle characters will now have their own possessions. Will they be comsumed by possessions too? Interestingly enough it only had worked for the second character I had replaced. I don't think the third or forth will have that option. Oh well I guess they will remain un-possessed.
One things for sure this game doesn't seem to work well on Windows 2000. The game seems to crash and yet you would expect it to work well. So this may vary with each persons computer as well. A friend of mine didn't have good luck putting his Table games on Windows 2000. He was also experiencing some computer problems at the time so it may have been a contributing factor.
I found that if I want to have a better chance at winning you can always create your character and another one to a least beat the odds. It's kind of fun to play two characters at least the odds will be greater in your favor. You can create a male and female character with the face maker. I think it's fun to play with both characters. I would have liked it if you had more choices with the voice options. Why not? At least you are 50-50 instead of 1 against 3 computer characters?
Also in the future if they were to make some downloads that you can add to the game like things for hoyle bucks, character voices, facial features for your characters. Also it would be great to exchange characters with other hoyle game players out there. It would be interesting to see if they had some plans like that. I am sort of curious what their 2005 and beyond that will hold.
I really like playing the double cross word game and the bump em cars. The bump cars is a newer game and is quite fun. The only problem I found is that you can't play 3 characters against the one character. That part of the game is buggy. I found that the only choice you have is to play 2-4 real characters. Also if you don't like the way the game is going you can always start all over again. I do sometimes because I do like the chance to win.
The face maker is a lot of fun to create some new and interesting characters. I wish they would have kept some of the other hairstyles and facial features that I have noticed are in the older versions of this game.
I really like the improvements that they made by upgrading the looks in some parts of the game which gives it a new and fresher look to it. I would have like to seen those changes with the other older characters that they added. I almost wonder if they will in the future games change a bit here and there just so that you will want to buy the next version that comes out.
I would also like to see them add a few more games like pin ball or mini golf. I really liked sierra mini golf and their pin ball games. I just hope that they change their game engines and revamp those games giving them more of an up-to-date 3D look.
I think that they would remake them and it would be great if they added them to the table games. It's hard to find a good pin ball game or mini golf game out there. I have looked around and couldn't find any ones with really good graphics and also fun to play. Can any one suggest a good pin ball game or mini golf game that is Windows XP compatible? I sure would like to find one and it's a shame that no one has with such a huge market out there.
I do like their games enough to continue to buy them because there are very few games out there that have as good graphics as they have even though they are cartoony. In comparison to other games out there their graphics are way better. They made re-use a lot and I have notice the cut backs and it may be because they are selling fewer games. I don't know why that is because I have seen other card games out there and some of the character graphics look really cheezy looking in comparison to the hoyle ones.
I give it a rating of 4 out of 5 for the new things that they added and I like playing the game. I like their games and will continue to play them but I would like to see more options or at least bring back some of the options that I would still like to see in their game.I don't care much for the cut backs but I will tolerate them a little mainly because I have enjoyed most of the Hoyle games.
