The release of the long-anticipated debut from this talented, 20-something, Georgia-bred chanteuse shows that Norah Jones isn't the only "it girl" out there. Wright's cool contralto, which was previously heard on Joe Sample's The Pecan Tree, is a southern stew cooked with ample helpings of soul, jazz, R&B, and gospel. This CD, equally produced by Tommy LiPuma, John Cowherd, and drummer Brian Blade, features mostly mid-tempo renditions of a jazz-fusion ditty, a spiritual, a Broadway tune, a Latin number, light classical, and original compositions. Wright's vocal weight and fluent delivery echoes the talents of Lalah Hathaway, whether she's putting her own sepia spin on Flora Purim's '70s gem "Open Your Eyes, You Can Fly," Mongo Santamaria's "Afro Blue" (with pianist Danilo Perez), or "Soon As I Get Home" from The Wiz. Though this record is a promising debut from Wright, one gets the sense that she's a soul singer at heart, as evidenced by the down-home title tune. One thing's for sure: the road to Lizz Wright's future is wide open with no barriers in sight. --Eugene Holley, Jr.
Chronique amazon.fr

This album is something you can listen all of the time. Her voice is so rich. This first album is a must for those you like to listen to a beautiful voice. This album caress your heart softly. I just discover this album in 2005! Que cet album est charmant!1

This was the best CD along with Angie Stone's new one STONE LOVE that I have heard in 2004. Lizz Wright has totally captured my imagination, my spirit and my heart with all the wonderful music on this CD.

My favorite gems on here are "End of the Line" (My god! This song takes me to another world, another dimension). Then I love "Soon as I Get Home", "Afro Blue", "Fire", "Goodbye", "Blue Rose".

It's just simply ONE HELL of a great album. I love this and Angie Stone's new one. Plus I'm reading the most fantastic, imaginative black love story I've read in years--"Flesh and the Devil" by Kola Boof. I'm in heaven.

Total powerful, strong QUALITY works of art to occupy myself with.

You can't go wrong with these three!!

Men cry in the dark, but I cried in my office (by myself). (2004-07-15)

I heard Lizz Wright's "Soon As I Get Home" on the car stereo. Of course I would catch the last 30 seconds of the song, but it was enough to catch my interest. I reached for a piece of paper and pen to write the name of the artist singing. I forgot all about it. About a month or so I was cleaning out my car and I came upon the piece of paper I had written on. I decided to get on the internet and purchase the CD. I didn't care what the CD sounded like, I simply liked what I heard. I'm what you would call a music freak. I don't do popular music that often. A knock was on my office door. Why, it was the delivery man delivering my CD. I ripped it open and popped it the CD player. The first note I heard, I paused. My ears was getting a massage of its life. The voice was so hauntly beautiful, it felt like I saw an old, good friend or loved one. When I heard "Soon As I Get Home" my eyes welled up. So, here I am in my office welling up thinking, "Where have you been,I miss you". I listened about 5 more times, tears streaming and shaking my head. Overall, this is a beautiful CD. Although this is her first CD, she has room for improvement. Don't compare Lizz Wright to Norah Jones. They have two totally different voices.
The Salt In My Stew (2004-07-13)

This young lady's remarkable and refreshing collection of songs have been in my cd player for quite some time. Lizz can sang folks and simply shines throughout this project. Her voice is similar to that of Oleta Adams in a jazzier musical backdrop. The songs are not necessarily straightahead jazz but are in keeping with the integrity of a jazz based format. Her grooving renditions of Walk With Me Lord and Soon As I Get Home are worth the price of the cd alone. Just as I thought music was dead along comes Lizz to return the Salt to my stew. Go get this one folks.
A Real Voice Has Emerged!!! (2004-07-02)

Lizz Wright has one of the best voices I have EVER heard! This album is definitely one in which you would sit back and reflect on life. When she sings, it is like she is telling a story. Her voice has a luminosity to it that other singers do not have. The songs on this album are slow and jazzy, for mature audiences. I really hope to hear from this young gem again in the future. I heard her live and she sounds just like she does on the CD. Favorites include Eternity, Goodbye and Blue Rose, however, there is not one weak song on this album. Every song is a treasure in its own right. I hope that Lizz Wright does not fall off due to lack of mainstream success. She is a vocal savior in a music industry that values image over talent and artistry.
