Doesn't support USB Devices (2003-11-15)

I was really excited when I got this product, because I thought in addition to testing it would allow me to use my older scanner that is not supported by Windows XP. So I installed in and then installed Win98 on a Virtual PC. After a lot of screwing around trying to get the thing to work, I found this on an FAQ at the Connectix website:

"... USB devices that require the installation of their own USB drivers (Zip disks, scanners, etc.) are not recognized by Virtual PC."

Which pretty much makes this product worthless for one of my intended uses. With all the printers, scanners and other devices that connect via USB this seems like a HUGE flaw in their product. If you want USB support, try VMWare Workstation

simply amazing!! (2003-06-10)

This software is sort of like TiVo - no one really gets it until they try it out, then they're hooked. Virtual PC basically lets you run multiple PCs (with almost any OS) in multiple windows on one PC. As far as each of the "guest" PCs know, they have their own dedicated hardware.

This virtualization gives you some neat control of the disk images (ie, what the virtual PC thinks its disk is). The disk images of the virtual machines are just files on your PC's harddrive. You can just copy then and you end up with two identical machines! There's also an option to have any harddrive changes written to an undo file, so if in a session something goes wrong (Ex, "format c:"), you can revert to the previous state of the machine with the click of a button.

I first used virtual PC to test out a change to the Windows 2000 login process. I didn't want to try changing the way the login worked on my real PC for fear of breaking it and being unable to get back in. I figured if I broke it on a virtual PC, I'd just click the 'undo harddrive changes' and be right back where I was!

Virtual PC is incredibly stable - there have been no crashes or major bugs ever since I started using it. The UI is simple and quite straightforward. I was able to get my first virtual PC up and running without browsing through manuals or help files.

Virtual PC is truly amazing. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who has more than one PC around you, or even someone who just wants to play a little!
