With the knockout one-two punch of 1992's Reservoir Dogs and 1994's Pulp Fiction writer-director Quentin Tarantino stunned the filmmaking world, exploding into prominence as a cinematic heavyweight contender. But Pulp Fiction was more than just the follow-up to an impressive first feature, or the winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival, or a script stuffed with the sort of juicy bubblegum dialogue actors just love to chew, or the vehicle that reestablished John Travolta on the A-list, or the relatively low-budget ($8 million) independent showcase for an ultrahip mixture of established marquee names and rising stars from the indie scene (among them Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames, Harvey Keitel, Christopher Walken, Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer, Julia Sweeney, Kathy Griffin, and Phil Lamar). It was more, even, than an unprecedented $100-million-plus hit for indie distributor Miramax. Pulp Fiction was a sensation. No, it was not the Second Coming (I actually think Reservoir Dogs is a more substantial film; and P.T. Anderson outdid Tarantino in 1997 by making his directorial debut with two even more mature and accomplished pictures, Hard Eight and Boogie Nights). But Pulp Fiction packs so much energy and invention into telling its nonchronologically interwoven short stories (all about temptation, corruption, and redemption amongst modern criminals, large and small) it leaves viewers both exhilarated and exhausted--hearts racing and knuckles white from the ride. (Oh, and the infectious, surf-guitar-based soundtrack is tastier than a Royale with Cheese.) --Jim Emerson

I purchased this DVD after a long viewing hiatus. I had purchased the VHS cassette over a decade ago when it first came out on video and subsequently enjoyed years of viewing. Some time back I misplaced the VHS cassette, sold it at a yard sale or pawned it in my early twenties while in need of some quick cash. I forgot what a great film this is. Tarantino really out did himself with this one. I've seen every one of Tarantino's movies which he wrote and directed and this is still the best; I've also seen many of the movies he only wrote, but didn't direct. His other films (e.g. the Kill Bill volumes) are clever and original, but they still aren't a comparison to Pulp Fiction. Even after thirteen years, this movie is almost timeless with its original story and clever dialogue between entertaining characters. Buy it - it's totally worth it.
Oh, I'm sorry, did I break your concentration? (2007-05-13)

Pulp Fiction was always one of those movies that I'd always wanted to see. No one in my circle of friends had ever seen it; I never got anyone coming up to me and saying, "Hey have you seen Pulp Fiction yet?!". However every once and awhile I would hear it being referenced to by some movie critic. And then I saw it on IMDB (great movie site by the way) as the fifth greatest movie of all time. Then I knew I had to see it.Everyday when I went to rent a movie I would always pass Pulp Fiction, pick it up, look at it read, the blurb on the back, and put it back down on the shelf thinking 'not today'. I mentally prepared myself for it. I knew it was a Quentin Tarantino movie so I had to be prepared for a little weirdness and I knew it was a dark humor classic so I had to be prepared to laugh at some pretty messed up things and I knew it was a little older movie (1996?) then what I liked to watch but one day I felt in the right mood so I picked it out and rented it.And boy oh boy had I been missing out. Pulp Fiction's story deals with the lives of several gangsters and lowlifes that intertwine. The plot line is non linear, and tells four main stories. For those of you Quentin Tarantino fans think of a plot like Sin City or for other people a plot like Babel.Right off the bat you'll notice the great soundtrack and the fact that it hosts a star studded line up: John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson and Tim Roth. All pull of some of the best performances of their life times. And the real magic of Pulp Fiction is the characters these guys play. Bruce Willis plays a down and out boxer who's asked to take a dive in a match. Uma Thurman is a mob boss's wife. Tim Roth plays out the Clyde part of an insane armed robbery couple. Harvey Keitel is magnificent as 'The Wolf' and even Tarantino acts flawlessly as a minor character. But the greatest performances of all in this movie go to the pair of hilarious hitmen played by Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta. Their characters are definitely two of the best of cinematic history (see my Listamania list for others) and deliver some of the best quotes ever produced from an actor's mouth (see my title for one of them, you have to see it in context). They are just unbelievably funny the whole god damn movie. Considering the disgusting things they do throughout the movie the fact that they can still make you laugh out loud is a testament to not only their acting but also to Quentin Tarantino's mastery at gallow's humor. His offbeat situations and character development via simple dialogue in this movie just show how great this director really is at manipulating movies. Particularly during Bruce Willis's storyline you get a lot of silence and pointless conversation that really builds his character. Tarantino also pushes the boundaries in this movie with one particular scene which I didn't find too disturbing but some people may (think American History X disturbing). These two spots may it's weakness in the eyes of some viewers. It will seem slow and too weird but I thought it was amazing. You have to like macabre humor to appreciate this movie fully. But if your like me and love your comedy dark then Pulp Fiction is a must see.
Un film à voir ! (2005-07-11)

great movie, some people just aren't capable of appreciation (2004-07-08)

THis film, Pulp Fiction, is a cult film. you have to be into the ideas and the thought process, and the way of talking and all that cult stuff to enjoy this CULT film. if you don't then that is because you are incapable, not stupid, not ignerent, just incapable. probably the type of person who would rather watch adam sandler talk in a baby voice and make jokes about the curvature (...). I love this movie because i follow the thinking that it takes to enjoy this movie, i enjoy the humor, the darkness, the soul evil and yet the enlightened thought of the whole movie, i eat it up. people who go around critiising tarentino, whether they are disgusted by their violence or just ignorent to his ideas, and just not thinking. yes, yes, you may not like tarantino for violence or for the way he tells a story, you may think it's stupid, but you should know that a movie of his is going to be violent before you see it and not watch it. if you don't like it, why would you spend the money to gain access to the film and watch it just to write a crappy review on it and submit it to a website. some people would say "oh welll, i just don't like tarentino" THAT'S GREAT, just don't watch his movies then. my dad doesn't enjoy the films and he doesn't watch them. if an idea is outside of your realm, then just don't expose yourself to it and shut up. stop watching these movies, start thinking about what you're doing, and who's in the wrong, because you're doing all this to yourself. now SHUT UP. i love this movie, i own all of tarantino's films on DVD and personally ran to the video store to purchase the first volume of KillBillvol.1 the DAY it came out, and i'm just 14. a 14 year old that can grasp the concept of Pulp Fiction, should be able to pass on to you reviewers who are probably a lot older than i, but still i log on here and i see your putrid crap. well shut up, because this movie is great and you're just not willing to think about things outside the box.
