The middle album of a trilogy that includes Swordfishtrombones and Franks Wild Years, Rain Dogs is definitely Waits's best enduring effort so far. The songs are first-rate, and there are a lot of them--19 in all, ranging from grim nightlife memoirs ("9th and Hennepin," "Singapore") to portraits of small-time hustlers ("Gun Street Girl", "Union Square") to bursts of street-corner philosophy ("Blind Love", "Time"). The album also contains the original version of "Downtown Train", which Rod Stewart turned into a smash hit. The image of "rain dogs"--animals who've lost their way home because the rain has washed away their scent--is an appropriate symbol for the entire cast of characters Waits has brought to life over the years. --Daniel Durchholz

His best. (2005-04-25) Tom Waits has had a number of undeniable classics in his 30 year career. Starting with his first album right up to his newest ("Real Gone") he has always made a point of making every recording fresh and unique... and essential. This is his apex. Where Wait's new ideas met the peak of his creativity and wit. For this price, you cannot afford to not buy this album. Classics like "Singapore," "Jockey Full of Bourbon," "Tango Till They're Sore," " Gun Street Girl," "Big Black Mariah," "Downtown Train," "Hang Down Your Head"... There does not exist a resistable tune on this album. Even if you need some time to let it grow on you, this will become one of your favourite albums. Buy it... for $6.99 for god's sake... BUY IT!
Tom strikes again (2003-12-03) Tom Waits is the greatest living songwriter, a true genius whose music will last for decades to come. Rain dogs ranks as one of his best albums, along with swordfishtrombones, bone machine and blood money. You will not be disappointed.
One of his best (2003-10-20) This is definitely one of Tom Waits' stronger albums. I would recommend it to both the curious and old fans alike. The melodies are original, the supporting instrumentation first-rate, and the lyrics poetic. You won't be disappointed.
Great Album. (2003-09-13) I bought this album only because it was "amazing" at least thats what my friend said. i wasn't blown away but i did really like it. i can't compare it to anyone because he sounds like no one. but i'll definitely be picking up some more tom waits.
