Editorial Reviews
From Amazon.com

Overwrought and undeniable, Meat Loaf's Bat out of Hell remains both one of rock's biggest--and least likely--hit albums. The byproduct of a partnership between beefy singer Marvin Lee "Meat Loaf" Aday and fellow journeyman/National Lampoon Road Show cast member Jim Steinman, Bat out of Hell met 1977's vaunted Year of Punk with a blast of neo-operatic, Wagnerian-scaled bombast (based on Peter Pan, no less) that was as reactionary as anything the spiked set and their supporters could possibly imagine--13 million units worth, and counting. Bat seems to have thrived on the same formula that's made Andrew Lloyd Webber a multimillionaire knight: if you do kitsch, do it big. And what could be more kitschy and emblematic of the '70s than the ubiquitous "classic rock" (an overused adjective that applies all too well here) of "Two out of Three Ain't Bad" or the breathless nookie-quest, "Paradise by the Dashboard Light," replete with Phil Rizzuto calling the play-by-play? This digitally remastered edition also includes '78-vintage bonus live cuts of "Bolero" (the live show's equally over-the-top opener) and "Bat out of Hell" that showcase the production's energetic, perfectionist bent. The sonic upgrading here also underscores the oft-overlooked efforts of producer Todd Rundgren. --Jerry McCulley

The dream of a young kid... (2006-12-01)

I used to lay in bed and listen to this album in the dark with headphones as a young kid. This is the album that made me want to pick up an electric guitar (which I really did), as Todd Rundgren plays what has to be some of the scariest and most inspired guitar licks ever, especially in the title track. I recently dug this out of my collection and listened to it driving on the highway and I swear my foot tramped on the gas of my 99 Altima in time with the big rev during the main solo in Bat out of hell. This record is highly theatrical and highly dramatic music, with not one bad song on the whole disc. Just simply a brilliant collaboration between the gothic mindset of Steinman and the Meatloaf man himself. If there ever was a classic late 70's album, this is it. Incidently, Steinman also produced another of the 80's most beautiful pop songs with Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart". Just a little trivia there for ya...Anyway, for the younger generation, this music is highly recommended, as albums like this are simply not made anymore. There's a good reason why this has sold millions and millions of copies. It deserved to.
My biggest inspiration (2004-06-19)

This guy and Jim Steinman are without a doubt in my mind, the best collaboration in musical history. Jim Steinman comes up with unbelievable melodies, and thoughtful lyrics. Great guitar, piano, and everything else. This CD is even better now that it has been remastered and it sounds better. The songs are very long, with a hard rock-opera feel to them. Buy this CD, and the second Bat out of Hell which in my mind is even better.
there's good reason why this is considered a classic (2004-02-15)

WOW! What an album (2004-01-21)

WOW! What an album. Bat out of hell soars above every other album and laughs at them in their faces, simply because it has the right to do so. This is a fantastic album which made Meatloaf a legend and created some of the most memorable and recognised songs ever. It was Bat out of hell, You took the words right out of my mouth, Paradise by the dasboard light and Two out of three ain't bad which made an unlikely superstar out of Meatloaf.

This album blew me away when I first heard it and altough a few of the songs may now sound a little dated, the magic from the first time I heard it is still there. Not one song on this album is a dissapointment which is why the album has lasted for over 27 years. it's the third best selling album ever and has stayed it the UK charts for over 472 weeks (That's almost 9 years!). Bat out of hell was #36 in the US music charts in 1990 thirteen years after its release and has sold over 35 million copies worldwide and continues to sell over 200,000 copies a year, today. I don't think it will be long before this album outsells every other.

Meatloaf is known as the Pavarotti of rock and this album really shows off his operactic, bombastic, over the top and theratrical style of music. This album is vital to anyones music collection and if you haven't got a copy yet, it is well worth getting. I'm a huge Meatloaf fan but I do not lie when I come to reviewing his music. Personnally I think this album is an absolute masterpiece of contempory rock and is the proof that Meatloaf is still, larger than life... and always will be.

1977's "Bat Out of Hell" is a grand masterpiece of theatrical rock bombast. In a year when punk and disco were in heavy rotation, this album astounded listeners with its intricate blend of hard rock, 1950's pop, and irresistable Broadway melodies. Composer Jim Steinman successfully made this musical formula popular in mainstream America, paving the way for symphonic bands like Dio, Blind Guardian, Symphony X, and Rhapsody. Singer Meatloaf, meanwhile, is the Pavorotti of rock & roll! Weighing over 300 pounds and flashing a tuxedo and cravat, he was an underdog that shattered the physical mold of the record industry. With an almost operatic singing voice and an acting background to match, Meatloaf adds to Steinman's lyrics a beautiful melodrama that no one else can imitate. The 9-minute-long "Bat Out of Hell," with its squealing metal guitars and intense piano keys, is meant te be sung from the perspective of a leather-clad vampire. "Hot Summer Night" and the jazzy "All Revved Up" are bold and balsy pop tunes about high school romance. "Heaven Can Wait" is a contemporary psalm that's given a subtle hint of gospel; the background's violin strings and horns create an aura that drifts along the wind like snowflakes. "Two Out of 3 Ain't Bad" is a unique acoustic ballad about a broken relationship. "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" is the quintessential duet; the vocals sung by Meatloaf and Ellen Foley (not to mention the play-by-play by Yankee star Phil Rizzuto) incorporate hysterical sexual overtones. All I can say in the end is that "Bat Out of Hell" MUST be included in one's own collection. If you are interested in the 1970's, I recommend you purchase this CD, along with Alice Cooper's "Welcome to My Nightmare" and Kiss's "Alive!"
