Music doesn't come more touching than this. With their debut single alone, the emotion-fortified "Shiver", Coldplay proved they could shift between elated and crushed in a breath as singer Chris Martin poured out music's oldest chestnut (unconditional yet unrequited love) with the shakiest of voices and a backdrop of epic guitars that rouse and tug at the heart strings. For 10 tracks on Parachutes, he comes out with these, adding new-found meaning to the most tired and overused rock sentiments--love found, love lost, love unrequited, hurting the ones you love and the struggle that is life--over acoustic guitars and emotionally fraught rock. And for once, all the clichés ring true, thanks to Chris Martin genuinely sounding like a man picking over the bones of his life and soul, coming up with equal parts reasons to be cheerful and seriously depressed. Not that Parachutes is a depressing album; there's too much conviction to the guitars and hope in Martin's words for that. Instead it's a beautifully tender balance that comes as close to perfection as anything that's come before it.

--Marc Zisman
Customer Reviews
A great beginning (2006-12-16) Not many bands can come up with such a strong debut album, but Coldplay managed it with ease. Full of good songs (3 or 4 outstanding songs), it contains many beautiful moments that leave deep and meaningful imprints.Simple arrangements, gorgeous melodies, unselfish musicianship and good singing combine to produce superb songs such as 'Trouble', 'Yellow', 'Don't Panic', 'High Speed' and the very pretty 'Parachutes'. Easy listening it may be, but so are many of The Beatles best loved songs.Coldplay will always have detractors because of their enormous (& well deserved) success, but it's plainly unreasonable after just a quick listen to this gem of an album.
Baa Baa Baa (2005-09-01) They can play their instruments - about as inventively as 14 year olds, picking up a guitar for the first time. They do write their own songs - in that tired old vein of British pop, everything's the same. The singing is a joke - why do the sheep take that whole falsetto bull**** so seriously? If you buy this - you're over 20 and slowly your braincells are crumbling, soon you'll spend every Sunday shopping with your partner, drink half a bottle of wine a night, you'll tut at children with any hint of life, you'll begin to get indignant about manners, you'll find Terry Wogan funny ... and then you'll die, having only ever listened to mid-tempo soft rock.
GREAT ALBUM (2004-12-27) This CD is moody. If you want really uplifting music, this isn't the best album to pick up. The musical talent displayed in this CD is amazing. They have great guitarists, an amazing drummer, especially on the track Trouble, and great vocals and piano, both done by Martin. Great CD.
We live in a beautiful world (2004-07-18) This album is absolutely awesome and suitable for diehard Coldplay fans and people who just like the songs alike. Chris' voice takes music to a new level, in the deepest dark depression and sheer radiant elation. My favourite song on the album is 'Don't Panic' but 'Spies' is great also. Oh, who am I kidding? All the songs are awesome!!!
You people can't be serious, right? (2004-07-13) BRITISH POP IS GARBAGE, PEOPLE!!! How can you guys seriously listen to all that piano tinkling in the background? This is music for wimpy people! You guys probably couldn't handle artists like Metallica, Tool, or Pantera......hell, you guys probably couldn't handle Linkin Park! And to the fairies....uh......I mean fellas in this band, do us all a favor and go sing like the girls you are to your cult of worshipers, because the rest of us just aren't interested. DOWN WITH BRITISH POP!!! (and all pop, for that matter).
