Sometimes bigger is actually better. Nearly matching the size of director Michael Bay's ego, this massive four-disc set is a veritable Pearl Harbor archive, and ironically, Bay's film remains the least interesting component. It's a purely conventional Hollywood take on the tragedy, using a clichéd love triangle between two ace pilots (Josh Hartnett, Ben Affleck) and a Pearl Harbor nurse (Kate Beckinsale) as an "intimate" means of spectacularly re-creating the attack that thrust America into World War II. The director's cut adds little to the previous DVD release, apart from authentic R-rated carnage during the Japanese raid, and minor expansion of the Hartnett-Beckinsale romance. Commentaries range from superfluous (Bay and film historian Jeanine Basinger) to highly entertaining (Ben Affleck and costars) and technically informative (primary production team), and a spirited examination of visual effects (with Bay and ILM supervisor Eric Brevig) is guaranteed to fascinate anyone interested in physical effects and CGI. A broad "making of" documentary is noteworthy for one-time viewing, while abundant historical records make this a valuable compilation of definitive materials.
The History Channel's "One Hour over Tokyo" and "Unsung Heroes of Pearl Harbor" provide depth that Bay's movie lacks, and Charles Kiselyak's interactive timeline is arguably the finest feature included, providing an in-depth historical perspective on U.S.-Japan relations. Even a brief reenactment of a Pearl Harbor nurse's journal is moving in a way that Bay's film can only try to be, while the "Interactive Attack Sequence" provides a multifaceted exploration of the entire production process (a highly educational feature for aspiring filmmakers). All in all, these four discs offer an admirable balance between Bay's technically impressive but ill-conceived epic and a thorough, fitting tribute to those who endured hell on that fateful Sunday in 1941. --Jeff Shannon

0 Star is my rating, I can't select it. (2006-03-09)  So you like war movies? STOP RIGHT THERE. This NOT a war movie, but most or less a love story. A more popular movie from 1997 called "Titanic", which I'm not a fan of but can respect the movie overall because when you seen a movie trailer for it, you were not mislead, has been ripped off and renamed "Pearl Harbor". "Titanic" & "Pearl Harbor" Commons:-Both have a love triangle-Both have result in a disaster-Both had a big budget The way the movie is presented with its "super American Americana Americanism" had stretched the truth beyond a reasonable limit. One such fact was that NO American fighters even got off the ground during the attack. Yet, somehow in the movie, the main stars got there planes up in the air and shot down many Zero fighters. Hopefully you will have read the above and decided not to buy, rent, or watch "Pearl Harbor". Want a good war movie? Check out "Das Boot", "Dark Blue World", or "Saving Private Ryan". Looking for a Classic war movie, then check out "A bridge too far", "Midway", or "All quiet on the western front". There not the best, but worth a watch or two. And if you haven't all ready heard of it "Band of Brothers" is very good, but some people have mixed feelings about this series whom are from other countries or who were directly involved in the conflict. The worst film or cheap comedy (2004-07-27) I can hard understand the theme of this film or whether it is.I suppose that the director and the producer of filme had been escaping from history classes at their hight school. They have bent dramatically the truth of history between America and Japan at that time. And I can not feel intellects in this film.They have a little intellect that cadres of Japanes army never hold a meeting at fields. Such kids never guess they don't such a thing. There are no bits to buy this.
Tasted Great (2004-07-19) Wow, I don't think I have ever seen a better depiction of crap than in this film. The only thing redeeming is that Ben Affleck was in it...on second thought, there was nothing redeeming about it. And coporations wonder why people download movies instead of going and paying for them. In film (as it is in music) if your product is not worth paying for, people will download it. This film is one of many examples where the dobly 5.1 and HD quality picture makes no difference. Wanna see this film? Get it from Kazza
Awesome deleted scenes (2004-07-13) This is the DVD to get, it has the deleted scenes of the love affair between Doolittle (played by Baldwin) and Beckinsale - the child Beckinsale carries was actually Doolittle's, not Josh Harnett's - in this restored, original version
good but not THAT good (2004-07-06)  This is a good movie but not great. It's way too long and the actors are not really that good. The special effects are amazing to look at but it gets boring after a while. Jennifer Garner had a very small role in the movie. Why didn't she got a bigger part is beyond me. This unrated version is not that special only has a lot more gore/violence. Why did I waste time and money on this one I really don't know. If you love violence movies buy this now if now avoid it at all costs.
