Beautiful but bland (2007-05-23) Many are going to find this review almost sacreligious, but I found FF7 incredibly boring. I like a strong storyline and relatable characters. FF7 had a shaky and inconsistent storyline to begin with, made even weaker by the game's constant veering off onto side stories, some of which had no bearing on the main story or to each other. To me it felt like a bunch of random small games strung together to make one long game, not like a cohesive story that was woven together well. The characters didn't develop to the point that I felt like I knew them or wanted to know them, in fact I found myself unable to care what happened to any of them. The special fighting skills (such as Knights of the Round) looked fantastic, but once you invoked one you pretty much sat and watched a movie for several minutes and you weren't part of the fight at all--the game was playing itself. Once you'd seen the skill a few times, it got really boring sitting and waiting for it to finish so you could get back into the game. Good opportunity for a bathroom break or to refresh your beverage, but not good RPGing. An RPG has to allow me to become immersed in the game, and FF7 never provided the sensation that I was part of the story or action. The designers clearly spent an enormous amount of time on beautiful, impressive graphics, and it shows; the game is visually stunning. For some players, maybe that's enough, or maybe they really enjoyed all the side games/projects because they can make the game different if you play it again. For me, gorgeous graphics are a bonus but won't sell me on the game, and I was frustrated at being constantly taken out of the quest to wander around in a casino, waste a huge amount of time breeding and racing some stupid birds, go downhill snowboarding, or whatever other weird side story came along. My fave RPG of all time is still the original Final Fantasy, for the old 8-bit Nintendo. While graphically it was quite good in its time, with the kind of graphics we are seeing now, it's like comparing a coloring book to a Rembrandt. Yet the storyline made it riveting and highly re-playable, and you never for a moment felt like you were secondary to the action. I know that a less than stellar review for FF7 is unusual; many people feel it's the best FF game ever, some even feel that it's the best RPG ever. For me, it was barely playable. I managed to get all the way through it once and will never want to play it again. Since then I haven't tried any other FF games and I possibly never will.
Look, listen, play!!! (2005-08-22) Alright, I know that this is just one of all them reviews that gives this game 5 stars, but that's because there's a REASON for it, alright? I have played this game when it was first released, and decided to replay it again. From all these years of playing different RPG's, this typical game lists as one of the best. The thrilling story and plot'll keep you guessing until the very end, all the different materias that gives you magic abilities are just plain cool, and of course the CHOCOBO RAISING!! (I have no darn idea why so much people HATE this part, this is very VERY crucial to get some of the most powerfulests of materias in the game! Maybe some people just don't know how to raise chocobos well enough...) Anyways, some'll say "The graphics are lame. I hate this game even if I never played it before in my life. Go away." I tell y'all, graphics are really not the most crucial part in gaming. Those people who beleive that graphics are what makes games fun are out-dated. Think of those classic Mario games on NES! The graphics were the most pixelests of them all, but it was hella fun!! Anyways, for those who never tried this game... Try it. I COMMAND THEE!
best final fantasy game, best of rpg games! (2005-07-29) ok if ur a final fantasy fan, or rpg fan i highly recomend this game to anyone of these games. im not going to write anything about this game besause if i did it would take all day to read. so therefore ff7 is the best of ff games period and of all rpgs. i highly recomend this game to anyone.
Best Game Ever. (2005-01-24) Three words: Best Game Ever. The best out of all the FFs. Graphics arn't the greatest but the story is the best I've seen in most RPGs. If you played this game and didn't like it, then I reccomend you play it again, finsh it and if you still don't like it go play one of the many story-less Idiotic RPGs ( that get better ratings than this) and you'll reallise that they fail next to FF7. I shall say it again, Best Game Ever.
One of the Best rpg games ive played. (2004-10-13) This is a very good game and one of my favorite final fantasy games that i have ever played. I have played final fantasy 4-10 and am playing ffx2. this game was the first final fantasy game that i have ever played and it introduced me to the wonderful world of final fantasy games. this game had very fun and interesting parts (the arcade ie.snowboarding, submarine battles, boxing etc...). and it also had a gripping story. although it did have its down sides (i did not like the breeding of chocobos). this game is better than other ff games in some respects but it is also not as good as others. the battle system for this game is much better than the one in ffx (in which you take turns). and it does not have that ugly junction system like ff8. but the main villain in this game is not as evil as the others in other ff games (people keep on talking about kefka from ff6 to be the evilest of them all). and the ending is not like the usual endings you get from other final fantasies. overall this is a good game but not the best final fantasy game out there.
