amazing! (2008-06-14)

i really enjoy this album, it's amazing. the guitar's nuts. the songs are technically intense, and sometimes when this happens the quality of the song suffers so that the guitarist can show off their mad skills, not so much the case with this album. all of the songs have amazing range and melody and can be listened to by the average person as just really great songs, not only by guitar students marvelling at what this guy can do, which is pretty intense in it's own right, but i'm hardly the person to talk up this guy's skill. this is more of an up beat album, not madly energetic, but calmly up beat, if that makes sense. i'd have to say that my favourite songs would be surfing with the alien and lords of karma, but quite honestly all of the songs are amazingly well done.
I actually wore out my first copy (2007-10-30)

What hasn't been said? This is one of the best instrumental guitar albums by a true innovator. Amazing sounds, licks that you subconsciously memorize and hum within a listen or two. The songs are not over the top progressive, just enough technicality to keep you engaged. I have 6 of his CD's and still like this one the best.

All I can really say about this is that I got it at the exact same time that I found that most coveted of musical schlock, William Shatner, "The Transformed Man." I am a man of musical humour whose taste runs much more towards emotional involvement and interest in what the musician is trying to tell me. I found none of that in either one of these albums. If you're new to guitar and have heard about the magic sounds of this mad genius than my advice is for you to, rather run out and search for Andres Segovia or Jimi Hendrix as both drip with emotion and incredible guitar skill, (not to mention ingenuity which is the defense of most Satch fans). This album is sadly lacking. If you're bound and determined to get this than may I also suggest the fascinating works of William Shatner?

The entire CD isn't seeing how fast one can play and how much you can bend the whammy bar. A perfect example is 'Always With Me, Always With You.' This song is melodic. Of course there are it's faster parts, but even those parts are melodic. The tapping part around 2:00 is an example. There are a few songs in which I think yes, all they are about is the speed, but it's by no means a coaster.
Most Revolutionary Instrumental album ever. (2004-04-17)

Joe Satriani in my opinion with this album took Instrumental rock where it has never been before. Every song is a gem on this, and Joe's songs on other albums are great too (aka 'Extremist') but let's focus on this one now.

*1) Surfing With the alien - a great song, GREAT rythm and very unpredictable lead parts. I can totally picture surfing with an alien in my mind when hearing this. Simply Brilliant. 5/5

*2) Ice #9 - weird but very sweet rythm, once again unpredictable lead parts. My fave part of this song is the crazy solo which reminds me of a car in a blizzard with the radio on... 5/5

*3)Crushing days - a great rocker, nice intro. and VERY VERY sweet lead rythm, the first 5 songs r some of my favourites from the album. 5/5

*4)Always with me, Always with you - a GREAT ballad, he uses the guitar like vocals here. Extremely beautiful and well written. a truly beautiful song 5/5

*5) Satch Boogie - another hit from the album, this ones probably the fastest (bpm wise) a very good boogie song.Another Classic (thats 5 of the best songs on this album in a row!)

6) Hill of the skull - A small, but nice little tune. Has quite an eerie sound. It is under 2 min long, but really settles down the CD after the fast satch boogie and lead us pretty well into the next song.... 5/5

7) Circles - eerie opening, but a great solo, this song stirs up some feelings that i cannot explain.

8)Lords of Karma - real nice guitar and cool riffs here, a really nice song. It gets outta the eerier stuff from before and is a rocker. 5/5

*9) Midnight- A BEAUTIFUL song another one of my fave along with the first 5, GREAT tapping techniques, a short song but a beauty. 5/5

10) Echo - a sad seeming song/eerie with cool guitar and great riffs, this one stirs up even more emotions then circles did. Makes you feel really peaceful. 5/5
