Editorial Reviews
From Amazon.com

The R&B queen's classic collection is augmented this time around by a long-overdue digital remastering, plus a few bonus tracks, presumably for those who found the original album a little on the brief side. In addition to James's well-known hits, including "I Just Want to Make Love to You" and "Stormy Weather," there are four additional songs: "My Heart Cries," "Spoonful," "It's a Crying Shame," and "If I Can't Have You." Although one might cynically suggest that these were added to give Etta fans something to purchase besides The Essential Etta James, it's definitely true that these tracks are worth hearing. --Genevieve Williams

This is Etta James's first full-length album, recorded for Chess Records' Argo subsidiary in 1960. It taps all aspects of her then-blossoming talent. There's the crooning rock ballad "My Dearest Darling" and the elegantly symphonic "Sunday Kind of Love." Her classic, brokenhearted "All I Could Do Was Cry" follows the sweet title track and the bawdy blues stomper "I Just Want to Make Love to You." And there's a version of Harold Arlen's "Stormy Weather," which Lena Horne made famous. James's fine way with such a wide embrace of material wouldn't again be this well displayed on a single album until she was united with producer Jerry Wexler for 1977's Deep in the Night. --Ted Drozdowski

American Blues = Lady Day, Pearl...and "Miss Peaches"! (2004-05-05)

Few voices in R&B History rival that of the lovely Etta James. The Blues Legend shares her devine gift of a voice with millions who appreciate her wonderful music. The heartfelt "At Last" is the definitive wedding song. The rendition of "Stormy Weather" rivals the Lena Horne version, and "A Sunday Kind of Love" proves that Etta James is American Blues Royalty. When you listen to a heartbroken Etta James declaring "All I Could Do Was Cry", you feel the pain of a hurt teenager.

"Miss Peaches" is one of the great R&B/Jazz singers of our time. This CD covers 14 of her best loved songs. It is a treasured part of my music collection, and I can highly recommend it!*****

Ms. James Is Exceptional! (2004-02-17)

My goodness. Etta is a goddess! Her voice sounds like an angel straight from heaven. Although Etta's voice is raw and powerful, it has a beauty to it that is completely unique to her. Not to mention, how can you forget the classic songs on this album, like "At Last" and "Sunday Kind of Love". You must check out this album. Etta's voice is like no other!

I love this CD. I had never heard of Etta James until I heard this CD recently and within an hour I was online ordering it. Very bluesy. Love every song on it. I really recommend it to anyone who loves blues or jazz.
At Last The Best (2004-01-19)

You know as I listen to this cd, one thing becomes clear. Etta James is raw, real, powerful, strong and to the point. None of today's singers can hold a finger to her. She is of the last great jazz/blues singers. Bessie, Billie, Ella, Sarah, Dinah, and Nina are gone. Only Etta is left....people need to show her more respect. Claps for Xtina for trying to keep Etta's legacy alive by talking about her on interviews and at her concerts. One listen to this gem and you will know why SOME call her "Queen of the Blues".
Today's Younger Generation Should Get This Album (2003-10-09)

This is what people who truly appreciate good music refer to as "R&B". On this classic set of tunes sung with the kind of power and conviction that many of today's young singers tend to shy away from (or just can't bring it, lol!), you get the RHYTHM and the BLUES in one devastating combination. Etta James is one of this country's unheralded treasures and everytime I listen to this album, I am reminded of how much we need true artists like her to keep good music from going bad. No serious music collection should be without this one because it IS essential.

Note: also get Bobby "Blue" Bland's 'Two Steps From The Blues' and play it back-to-back with Etta James' 'At Last' for an R&B listening experience like NO OTHER! By the way, are these two in the Hall of Fame, yet!?!?!?
