Songwriters Walter Becker and Donald Fagen launched Steely Dan with a seductive, poker-faced 1972 debut as smoothly accessible in its music as it was elusive in its thematic concerns. The opening "Do It Again" snagged swift commercial success as one of the most mysterious pop hits in history, a sultry rock cha-cha that chronicled a series of harrowing catastrophes far removed from the reheated love songs and pro forma counter-cultural rebellion of the day. Though the core band boasted two formidable guitarists, Jeff Baxter and Denny Dias, it was the bloom of Fagen's keyboards and his reedy, smart-ass vocals that carried Thrill light years beyond modal, blues-based rock. That said, an enduring highlight remains the furious six-string fantasia of "Reelin' in the Years", spiked by Elliot Randall's downright historic solos, at once dour and giddy in its indictment of a poser, while "Dirty Work" (featuring short-lived, nominal lead singer David Palmer) offers a decidedly adult vignette of adultery. There isn't a weak track here, astonishing, considering how much growth future Dan albums would display. --Sam Sutherland
Customer Reviews
I keep coming back (2006-12-16) After 30 years of Steely Dan, I keep coming back to this, the first hint of what would become one of the most interesting, eclectic and thought provoking bands in rock. Every few years I'll pull out a Dan album or CD and then I'm hooked again for another few months until it's time to move on again to the next musical fad. It's debateable whether or not this is their best album (I put it in a tie with about 5 other albums) but it certainly is unique. It's interesting to hear other vocalists doing this music and it would be pretty hard to imagine anyone doing a better job on Dirty Work (a true pop classic) or Brooklyn. While Fagen's voice is undoubtably Steely Dan and a musical treat, where would they have gone with a smoother more accomplished vocalist on occasion. A provocative statement maybe, but this album is evidence that the wealth could be spread around a bit. Bottom line, great album by one of the greatest bands of our time.
brilliant (2004-07-16) I've always been a big Steely dan fan. I own 3 or 4 other albums besides this one and this one is just as good as any other. In some ways, I like it more than any of the others. It's different than most of the others. When I heard some of these songs on the radio, I did not know it was Steely Dan until i took the time to look them up. Great album.
A hell of a debut (2004-06-18) This is, as the title states, a hell of a debut. It is very different than what the band would release afterwards, since it features several vocalists, but "Can't Buy a Thrill" is an essential purchase. I remember driving around with my parents in their banana yellow 72 Buick, listening to this 8 track until it died (both the car and the cassette). This was my mother's favorite, and now I certainly understand why. The boys' literacy was unmatched, their musicianship was unparalleled, their sense of melodicism and songcraft was ahead of its time. This is music that bridges the gap between all people, all races, all genres, and it is astonishing that the group would only get better over time. All songs here are essential. A message to anyone who does not have this album in their CD collection: YOU ARE SERIOUSLY MISSING OUT. GET OFF YER LAZY BEHIND AND GET THIS NOW!!!!! Best tracks: all, but if I had to pick my faves, "Do it Again", "Dirty Work", "Midnight Cruiser", "Kings", "Only a Fool Would Say That", "Reelin' in the Years", "Fire in the Hole", "Change of the Guard", "Turn that Heartbeat Over Again". NOTE: There's an extra track that you may not be aware of that is VERY RARE, but worth it: "Dallas", featuring vocals by Jim Hodder (same man who emotes "Felonius my old friend, turn around and let me shake your hand" in "Midnight Cruiser"). "Dallas" is a good one, and any true Dan fan should try to find this one as well to complete this album. That should have been here as well, and you can bet your bottom dollar that I have it, so GO GET IT.
One of the greatest debut albums of all time. (2004-05-25) EVERY SINGLE SONG ON THIS ALBUM IS GREAT. A MUST OWN FOR CLASSIC ROCK/'70s POP FANS.
what can be said........ (2004-04-25) ...........if all pop music was this good very little work would get done!
