Editorial Reviews
From Amazon.com
Eric Clapton has metamorphosed from tie-dyed guitar god for a mostly male congregation to Armani-clad crooner and chart-certified ladies' man, yet it misses the point to focus on that transition without considering '90s forays into blues (on From The Cradle, his brilliant 1994 live-in-the-studio homage), techno, and the silky contemporary R&B of "Change The World." Pilgrim, his first studio album of new songs since Journeyman, reflects all these facets in his most ambitious, and certainly darkest solo project. Its title isn't casual: These are elliptical meditations on the ravages of time, as preoccupied with matters of the spirit as affairs of the heart. "My Father's Eyes" opens the song cycle with allusions to the traumatic death of toddler son Conor (the inspiration for '92's poignant "Tears In Heaven"), while the title song adopts the fevered, falsetto vocal style of Curtis Mayfield to riveting effect. Coproducer Simon Climie sculpts electronic orchestrations and favors clipped synth rhythms, while Clapton himself largely eschews his once dominant, climactic electric solos for restrained but potent acoustic filigree, staccato riffs, and fluid rhythm work, letting loose with a rougher, more biting edge on the squalling "She's Gone." --Sam Surtherland

--Philippe Margotin

River of tears (2004-06-07) This album is a definite departure from anything Clapton has done before. It's modern, R&B, and extremely produced. Overall, I have to say that the song quality is uneven, ranging from kind of saccharine("My father's Eyes") to brilliant("River of Tears" and "Broken Hearted"). "River of Tears" is one of the saddest songs that I have ever heard. Of course, blues covers are his specialty, and he shines on songs like "Goin' Down Slow." Two major criticisms of this album. The first is that it is overly produced. Eric sounds best when there's a little more grit in the production. Secondly, it has elements of that Babyface sounding R&B. It doesn't quite work.
Eric meets Curtis (2004-05-25) Roger Waters of Pink once said: "The only important think about a finished product is whether it moves you or not". Pilgrim moved me. For me it's the "Eric meets Curtis" album, featuring his most soulful playing and singing ever. His guitar sounds sweet and milky like never before. If this is not the Clapton you want - no problem. He's done Crossroads and Layla before.
A Musicians review of this album... (2004-05-07) Over Eric Claptons entire career, we have seen him evolve from Blues purist, to a country boy, to a session man, to southern rock, to middle aged crooner, to acoustic brilliance, to soundtrack composer, To 80's synth-pop... and 'Pilgrim' is no different. The musical chameleon himself has officially thrown his hat into the R&B/Soul ring with grace.. As soon as play is pressed, we hear a completely different Clapton: drum machines with a smooth hip-hop beat and thumping bass, guitar effects, synth bass, percussion... This is a very soulful/experimenting sound. In my opinion, the songwriting is the standout feature of this album. Here we find our hero laying out his thoughts and feelings into a collection of songs that are very moving and lyrically driven. For possibly the first time, we find clapton writing songs with more complicated melodies and in depth lyrics... Where the emphasis is placed on the entire arraingement instead of being built around a jam session. Because of this new avenue, many of the (Cream/Derek & The Domino) fans who are only interested in "Gods" guitar glory automatically shut the cd off and disreguard it. But wait, did you actually 'listen' to it? Clapton provides some excellent guitar work throughout with great hooks and emotional melodies. "A true guitar 'GOD' is one who knows what NOT to play"... just remember that! The guitar lines clapton provides are inventive and melodic which proves that he truly knows how to communicate with the instrument on any level, not just a great-blistering solo. I have to admit that when I first bought the album and put it on, I was thrown for a loop because of the drum machines that were on each track. But after I sat and truly listened to the album, it connected to me in a lot of ways. This is a very dark and emotional album where you can tell that Clapton put everything he could into making this unique. (Now having said all of this, I have to say that this album is my personal favorite of all clapton solo works, and I have them all..!) Try it out with an open ear and a diverse mind. You'll actually grow to be quite fond of it..! All The Best, The AndyMan!
Eric Clapton is Finished (2004-04-08) I'm awfully surprised Clapton released this. The vast majority of this album is "B" or "C" rate music. Actually, it's the all-time worst album from Eric Clapton. I don't know why this guy refuses to release material like the stuff that put him in teh spotlight in the first place to at least reassure his fans that the fire is still in him. This CD sux.
A rocking pilgrim! (2004-03-04) I bought this album a few days after seeing Eric Clapton in concert in April 1998. He was then promoting this album. He opened with MY FATHER'S EYES,which was the first hit from this album. That song along with RIVER OF TEARS was reused for CLAPTON CHRONICLES,released in October 1999. PILGRIM is from the Mel Gibson-Danny Glover movie "Lethal Weapon 4". BORN IN TIME was written by Bob Dylan. ONE CHANCE and INSIDE OF ME have hip-hop style R & B. I heard SHE'S GONE on the radio so I believe that was a hit also. All the other songs are good.
