Adequate (2004-06-21)

This is an adequate compilation of the "radio hits". The albums give a more complete picture of the group and should be purchased first. However, this one has "Here at the Western World", which made its initial appearance here. "Greatest Hits" is good for the car. It misses quite a few key tracks, like "FM", "King of the World", "Boston Rag", "Don't Take Me Alive", "Deacon Blues", and anything from "Gaucho" (this preceded "Gaucho" by two years). "Greatest Hits" and the companion "Gold" are good and should be purchased in tandem. I would recommend any of the actual studio albums and the "Complete Steely Dan" box set, with every one of the songs from the first era, 72-80. This will suffice for casual fans and those addicted to the FM dial. Radio programmers will also love this for its conciseness. I would not recommend this to Dan fanatics, though. Two more thoughts: "Chain Lightning" and "Dirty Work" should have been here, and I'd like to see an "official" live SD release from the early 70's ("Record Plant" is only available in bootleg form, but is a must- buy).
You can hear how the Dan we came to know and love developed. (2004-02-24)

.....jazzy blues influenced tunes with nasal Donald Fagen sounding like he's full of sleeze. There's a photo of Fagen and Becker in the sleeve that has them standing in a hotel lobby lounge in front of a balding piano player...obviously playing Just the Way You Are or Feee-heee--lings. Fagen and Becker look as if the day the photo was taken was coincidentally the 2nd or 3rd day they've gone without sleep.

But with those funny and biting tunes like Haitian Divorce, The Fez (in some neighborhoods, The Jimmy) and Doctor Wu and Peg, they could've been up trying to get a riff right in the recording studio or some kinda obscure reference to fit into the lyric, rather than any kinda nefarious goings on that the voice and the characters in the songs exhibit. Good art is hard work, peeppose! Two glaring omissions from this product when it was first released are The Royal Scam and FM (No Static At All), but that won't stop you from enjoying these two in their element.Plus, subsequent product has all the Dan you can imagine. Also, the cast of thousands of session players--including the Crusaders and drummer extraordinaire Steve Gadd and vocalists like Michael Mcdonald and Patti Austin--should be noted.

A Good Chronicle Featuring Many Enjoyable Hits From That Era (2002-07-02)

An admirable retrospective of the `72-`78 period combining every cut of talented grade. Having this CD + Gaucho (the only studio album subsequent to that timeline including the likes of Babylon Sisters, Hey Nineteen, Time Out Of Mind and others) is all any average listener/fan would really ever need or want in his/her collection from this band. However, if you consider yourself a more avid follower of Steely Dan's music and instead would like all great classic tracks included, the double-disc Show Biz Kids 1972-1980 (containing missed songs Deacon Blues, Black Cow, Chain Lightening, FM, etc. from those mentioned above) might well be your best choice. It includes all their songs that could ever be considered worthy of a `hit` title. And if you would prefer to advance yet one step further, what I consider the `box set syndrome` might be your final alternative (more like compressing one track recording after another into some time package wrap but an available option for your interest/money spending). With regards to their so-called reunion discs that in past years have been released, they're respectable but not consistent with the quality Dan fans grew up on or later came to recognize. Because they rearrange the original Becker/Fagen potential that once was so highly appreciated from the group, you might help yourself better say by giving them a listen on some casual friend's CD player/system...
pop nostalgia (2001-04-20)

Seems I can still remember SD with their signature rythm, when AM first brought us "Do It Again" in the '70s. Back then it was a wise move to stay hip with the innovative R&B sounds that so marked the greatest era of pop.

Sounds were coming from every direction - jazz, rock, western - and new mixed with old as the century moved ahead in terms of traditional moods and new-born sensations.

For this was a time of violence and experimentation, and SD certainly emulated the trends of the times with their own blend of electronic romp, night-club instrumental and ghetto librettos - as "Reeling in the Years", "Bhodhisattva", "Here at the Western World" and "Kid Charlemagne" energetically attest.
