Editorial Reviews
From Amazon.co.uk
This 1965 album is where vocalist and harmonica player Junior Wells comes into his own. An early collaboration with Buddy Guy, the two of them sum up the 1960s funk-rock-blues that lay ahead. Hoodoo Man Blues inspired Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton and a host of other musician-fans. Wells and Guy don't shy from creating James Brown-funkified blues, or from putting a rock edge to their blues; but neither do they shy from traditional blues. Their version of "Good Morning Little School Girl" is a proper update--still menacing, with less of a country blues feel. Also not to be missed is the instrumental workout "Chitlin Con Carne". --Robert Gordon

As good as an album can be. (2004-05-18) Listening to this album with the lights out puts me "there" more than just about any album I've heard. In a smoky room where musicians and audience are connected. This album is real.
The Greatest (2004-02-12) In case there's any confusion, this isn't just the greatest blues album of all time, this is the greatest album of all time. Don't doubt it. It's perfect. As good as it will ever get.
must have blues album (2004-01-13) The greatest blues album ever recorded.. A must have!B.B. King at the Regal has nothin on this, a classic.
Are there more than 5 stars... (2004-01-09) cause that's what I would give this CD if I could - Quite simply the best non-compilation blues CD of all time
Good but not quite the classic I was expecting (2003-06-01) This is a good blues album, one of the very first blues LPs that wasn't just a collection of already issued singles. But I must admit that, compared with the best work of men like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James and Rice Miller (Sonny Boy Williamson II), "Hoodoo Man Blues" is not in the same league. There are several great songs, and the playing by both Wells and Buddy Guy is excellent .... But the overall impression suffers a bit from the inclusion of too many weaker songs and covers that don't add anything significant to the originals.
