I should have known... (2004-07-08)

with 100+ track listings that these were not complete samples. Somehow I didn't notice this until AFTER I bought it. This CD gives you NO idea of how these pieces sound, it's better suited for a game of opera Name That Tune. Please, don't waste your money.

you're stupid. If you want to learn more about opera, I suggest lectures by Robert Greenberg sold by the Teaching Company, or Opera 101 by Plotkin. This is just a total waste of money.

Whew! This is for the computer (2004-02-11)

I bought this thing years ago, played it on the computer, thought the selections were too short, and forgot about it. Then, when I was making up a short lecture about Grand Opera for a college business class, I remembered that the clips from this interactive CD might be short enough for the typical student attention span. I used 20 cuts, including the very lovely one from the Pearl Fishers (Bjoerling/Merrill), and every one of them illustrated some point or other...without all the editing. I also told my students that, if they came into opera tickets because of corporate sponsorship and they had no clue what they were about to see, they could get a quick "fix" on their computer by using the biographical and topical material on this particular CD, which I referenced by name in the presentation. It's not for the die-hard fan, to be sure, but it's done with a wink and a smile. It even included an aria (for which there never was an opera) written for the movie Citizen Kane!

A fun way to hear 100 great snatches of song for $4 (2003-09-18)

At $3.98 for 100 musical "moments" on one CD, you know it's going to be brief snatches of tunes and singing - hello?

But there is much fabulous singing and music reprised here, put this on and wait for something to make you jump up and find out: "what's THAT!"Like the Pearlfisher's duet with Bjorling& Merrill, in case you hadn't heard that version before.Or Eleanor Steber's Sempre libera.what fun! Make a quiz out of it with friends: whazzat?You may need to run out and get the whole item (the raison d'etre of the whole exercise, clearly).
