Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording

The great irony of John Barry's Academy Award-winning score for Out of Africa (which also took the Oscar as Best Picture) is that it almost never was; director Sydney Pollack had originally envisioned the film with native African music, going as far as laying the indigenous score down as he was editing. But the weight of John Barry's arguments--not to mention his considerable track record and composing gifts--held sway, and the composer delivered on his intent: a lush, romantic masterpiece for the ages. --Jerry McCulley

engaging musical score (2008-05-11)

Beautiful film music in many respects, but at times perhaps a little too "sweet" and Hollywoodish for some tastes. Another issue is one can object to is the "idealization" of African through this music -- as did Dances With Wolves music idealize the U.S. Western frontier -- from a distinctly Northern European standpoint. For myself, this is not particularly an issue, as the movie stands on its own as a work of art (and clearly does take a mostly European perspective), so does not have to be culturally African...

I can't say enough about this soundtrack. It literally MADE the movie. It's truly the most moving music I think I've ever heard.
Music To Make You "Swoon" (2003-08-01)

This review refers to the "Out Of Africa" Soundtrack CD by MCA Records....

Old Fashion phrases like "dreamy" and "makes me swoon" come to mind when I think of the beauty in this music. Composer John Barry has added his genius to many films,"Dances With Wolves" and "Indecent Proposal" just to name a couple, and this one is one of the most beautiful and dramatic examples.

There are 12 "dreamy" tracks. Opening with the "Main Title"(I Had A Farm In Africa"), and including three variations on "Karen's Theme"("I'm Better At Hello", "I Had A Compass From Denys", and "If I Know A Song of Africa"), Barry's genius captures Karen's emotions, her feelings for Denys and her passion for the country and people of Africa). "Flying Over Africa" and the "End Title", ("You Are Karen")..will at the very least evoke goose bumps, and if you have seen the film and remember those scenes, may even bring a little lump to your throat. There is also some tradtional African Music, "Siyawe" which is wonderful and then there's Mozart - "Concerto For Clarinet and Orchestra in A" performed by The Academy Of St. Martin-In-The-Fields, and Directed by Neville Marriner(Jack Brymer, Clarinet).

The CD is an excellent quality. It sounds wonderful on the stereo. I like to turn it up quite a bit, so I think my neighbors must love it too, cause I haven't heard any complaints!

So, "Let The Rest of The World Go By" (also included), get ready to "swoon" and enjoy.....Laurie

Wore out the first one and bought another! (2003-07-10)

What can I say? John Barry is superb in this effort to take you away to exotic lands full of promise and adventure. His musical effort on the CD certainly keeps you in the la-la land of adventure, romance, curiosity and sheer delight. The music is so tangible, you could reach out and touch the beauty it evokes and breathe in the rainbow of freshness on the plains.
Great music for anytime... (2002-03-12)

If you are like me, then you probably love music. This CD is one that you can listen to while doing other things or just relaxing with your eyes closed on a quiet afternoon.

John Barry is a remarkable composer and conveys a great deal of emotion in his music. This collection from the movie Out of Afrca is only one example of his talent, but a good example at that.

Hghly recommended!
