Editorial Reviews
From Amazon.com

Faith No More are virtually impossible to categorize; they blend metal and rap elements in a mix that becomes seamless on The Real Thing, whose hit single, "Epic," is a perfect combination of these disparate genres. Other high points are the thrashy "Surprise! You're Dead!," an excellent cover of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs," the funk-layered-with-keyboards "Falling to Pieces," and the soft but spooky "Zombie Eaters." With the addition of vocalist Mike Patton, the band secured a highly talented frontman and skilled lyricist. The Real Thing is one of those rare albums that is impossible to quantify but astoundingly good. More accessible than the follow-up Angel Dust, it's also the first album new Faith No More listeners should get. --Genevieve Williams

Late Review, so what else is new? (2008-01-02)

Faith no More is one of those bands you just know must've inspired the nu-metal generation. They're grandfathers of making rapping and loud vocals with guitars... but they include solos and humor througout. You have to wonder which one is better, this or Angel Dust? Well, I'll let you guys figure that one out...5/5
close but no cigar ,fnm. (2007-11-03)

this album is the first fnm album to get bigtime attention,it`s got the hits, the nice and safe songs, that being said it`s their weakest effort with mike patton.there are some good songs on this disc but compared to other fnm discs it lacks, but still a must buy to complete your fnm collection

I bought The Real Thing on cassette tape back in June of 1989, right after I graduated high school (oh, man, I feel so old). I had just gotten into Introduce Yourself, their previous album with Chuck Moseley on vocals, so I didn't know what to expect with Mike Patton, who I had never heard of.Anyway, I had read a story somewhere that he had joind FNM and written all the lyrics for The Real Thing within the span of a few weeks, and, if I have one negative thing to say about the album, that would be it...some of the lyrics seem a bit thrown together ("Epic," for example).Other than that, it's a masterpiece, with excellent instrumentation throughout. Billy Gould's bass and Roddy Bottum's keyboards really carry this album from start to finish. Several reviewers have previously noted the offbeat song subjects, from a baby's thoughts on its mother, to a pedophile who would "do anything...for the little girlies..." Sometimes creepy, sometimes cryptic, always unique. The title track is the real jewel of the album, though, clocking it around 8 minutes, building from a quiet whisper of keyboards and drums to a heavy guitar and bass roar and back down...it's quite a ride. And the opener, "From Out of Nowhere," is excellent (and speaks to anyone who has literally had someone come into their life from out of nowhere, as I had happen less than I year after this came out).I listened to this from start to finish the other night, and it's still amazing. It sounds nothing like the two previous albums (We Care a Lot and Introduce Yourself) and nothing like their subsequent albums, which is what is what made Faith No More great band...they never sat on one style, and after the commercial success that came with The Real Thing, they turned around and put out a much darker/quirkier/heavier/schizophrenic album with Angel Dust, rather than making a whole album of "Epic"s.The Real Thing an essential part of a well-rounded CD collection. Buy it if you don't have it!

My first exposure to FNM was through the song Epic like most others a while ago. I liked the piano ending but I thought it sounded a lot like those rap metal groups. Eventually, I became interested in FNM through my exposure to other early 90s and late 80s music. I bought Angel Dust. And then I bought this. Faith No More was one tight band despite their future and brewing problems with each other. They had one of the craziest and most talented vocalists in a while. He could do manage everything from a soft croon to death metal growls and ear shattering shrieks(which he would exhibit on Angel Dust). The guitar work was handled quite well by Jim Martin. He usually provided a background for the songs, occasionally stepping out for a solo or exhibiting some pretty cool riffs. Faith No More's rhythm section kept pace extremely well with the others. Mike Bordin's often catchy drum beats drove the songs forward as Billy Gould's funky slap bass work gave the songs a foundations. Above all, Roddy Bottum's keyboard work hovered, creating moods and adding to the songs.

1. From Out of Nowhere: This is a pretty good power chord driven opener. The bass lines are pretty cool in this one. Overall, very good but I think they could have picked a better opener. B+

2. Epic: Obviously, this is the most well known FNM song and is pretty much their only real US commerical hit. It is very catchy with its rapped verses. Sometimes Mike Patton's voice is reminiscent some RHCP vocals from their 80s and early 90s stuff. The piano outro is great. Perfect way to end the song. A

3. Falling to Pieces. I believe this was the second single off this album. It is another funky track that starts off with some nice bass. I love the chorus and pre choruses. One of my favorites. A+

4. Surprise Your Dead: Another great song. This time FNM try heavy metal. Patton shouts, scream and growls his way through this song. This is the heaviest song on the album. There's also a great galloping guitar riff somewhere in this song. A

5. Zombie Eaters: This is a pretty good ballad. The beginning is soft and serene moving into a harder rapped section. Patton's voice in the rap sections is annoying at times IMO. After the rap sections, there's a great metal riff that's repeated a couple of times before the "keep me hot, keep me strong,..." part. A-

6. The Real Thing: The title track is an 8 minute epic. The singing parts are exceptional. The drum intro is cool too. Very good if a little long. A-

7. Underwater Love: This is a great funk tune. The keyboards and guitars make the song have a dream like quality. A

8. The Morning After: Another funky track. Not as good as the last one though. The bass and drums pretty much dominate the song. Patton's vocals are good as always. B+

9. Woodpecker From Mars: I really never got into this one. It's an eastern sounding instrumental with the violin. Its ok. B-

10. War pigs: This is a great cover of the classic Black Sabbath tune. Its pretty much done note for note. All the instruments shine on this one. Great song. A

11. Edge of the World: This is a pretty soft piano song. Its kinda relaxing until you realize the whole pedophile theme. Weird humor. Great song though. A

So all in all, I recommend this CD very much. Also, you should check out Angel Dust. Mike Patton's other works with Mr. Bungle are good too.

When you review an album like "the real thing" by Faith no More there's no need to talk about genres or styles. This is just pure genius , that's all there is to say. Buy this album if you want to step into a new dimension. One of the best rock albums ever made. You will never let it slip away, YOU WILL NEVER LET IT SLIP AWAY!
