You can dance and you probably will if you put on this 1987 compilation of the material girl's best jams. The eight-and-a-half minute "Into the Groove", remixed by Shep Pettibone, may be Madonna's single best tune and it's sure to fill the dance floor. There are only 10 tracks here, and a couple of songs get multiple remixes, but you do get "Holiday" and "Everybody", lesser known but not lesser grooves. Madonna had a few dance hits after this collection came out, and one day they'll most likely be a Madonna dance box set, but until then this will give you a fine aerobic workout. --Charles R. Cross

Cette sélection ne contient que dix titres, certaines des chansons étant présentées sous plusieurs versions remixées. Mais on y retrouve "Holiday" et "Everybody", moins connus mais tout aussi dansants. Madonna a sorti quelques tubes dance après cette compilation, qui se retrouveront certainement un jour sur un coffret de ses meilleurs titres dance. This is a great compilation of her best dance songs before 1990. You will not find anything new on this album, but all the good dance songs are on it!

A Classic 80s Dance Album! (2004-07-09)

I love this album! Some people complain that the mixes are cheesy and not at par with today's standards. Well, FYI - this album was released in 87! You really can't compare it with Madonna's new mixes of today. In any case, this will always be part of my collection because I really enjoy all the songs. They are upbeat, fun and a great way to re-live the 80s!

Absolutely Wonderful (2004-06-07)

Such a great Madonna CD to have. The first song Spotlight is so much fun and motivational that it puzzles me that it never appeared in any of Madonna's other albums. Also I really like how there's no pausing between the first 5 tracks. A must have!

Vintage Madonna. (2004-05-02)

"You Can Dance" is a snapshot of classic, vintage Madonna, a mix CD of her most popular dance hits back in the 1980s. Some would dismiss this CD, which was released in the fall of 1987, as a transparent cash-in, but it works surprising well as a dance record, even if the production does sound a bit dated. The kickoff, "Spotlight," is one of Madonna's very best songs, an underrated track that's strong enough to be released as a single. Fans will certainly be bobbing their heads to the beat in approval. The 12-inch versions of "Physical Attraction" and "Everybody" are gems that remind us of Madonna's r&b roots, while the extended mix of "Into the Groove" is even better than the edited version of the classic single. In addition, the CD version of "You Can Dance" has 3 dub versions of "Holiday," "Into the Groove," and "Where's the Party," and, unfortunately, they're all throwaways. It's not that they're terrible, but I think a better choice for a bonus track would have been the extended version of "Open Your Heart" or "Like a Virgin." Still, "You Can Dance" is a can't-fail purchase for both Madonna fans and lovers of 80s dance music. Grade: B.
