Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording

When it comes to making albums of epic proportions, few rival this magnificent production that a trip the band took to New York City inspired in 1973. The underlying story is of a street kid named Rael who, thanks in part to the realities of big city life, undergoes a weird and mystical transformation. Containing extended instrumental sections showcasing the extraordinary talents of Tony Banks, Steve Hackett, and Phil Collins, as well as the expressive vocals and often disturbing lyrics of Peter Gabriel, this is the album that located Genesis truly on the map. --Paul Clark

Jeff fell down the hole, screaming simultaneously... (2004-07-07)

I have been doing reviews for quite a time now but have only just plucked up the courage to do a genesis review. I suppose I've been putting it off because they are such a complex band that there is so much to talk about. Well here it goes... and by the way, don't be put off by the seemingly negative beggining. I have always felt that to say that both Lamb lies Down and Pawn Heart by Van Der Graaf Generator are in the same catagory of music is a little odd. Both termed as prog (progressive) rock they sound as different from each other as Chuck Berry does from 50 Cent. I feel that prog should sound raw and, well, weird. But this doesn't. It almost sounds like a musical in places. There are several pop rock tracks, Counting Out Time and Lily White Lylith being two of them. This sounds like a really polished epic... and it is. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not writting this to say Genesis lost their way. Far from it. This is a great, stunning album, the last good one they'd make. I'm writting this to tell you that this isn't Foxtrot, Trespass Selling England by the Pound etc. This is a tight, all action album full of great, mostly under five minute, songs. It still has the Genesis sound of before and if you like their work prior to this you will enjoy this album. Now then, I'll just talk of the epic part without explaining it, thus ruining the first time experiance for you guys as other reviews have done. In fact there is no one story within this album. It can be interprated as a face value story, or as whatever you want it to be. It is about a guy apparently called Rael who, one way or another is lost. That is all I shall say, although I'm sure that by the song titles you should be able to guess that a lot weird things happen. To sum up, if you have enjoyed Genesis albums up until this, those being From Genesis to Revelation (almost a Cat Stevens album) Tresspass (beggining to get that Genesis sound, but Mr Stevens is still prodominent) Nursery Crime (an odd almost post-Lamb Lies Down sounding album) Foxtrot (there's that sound) and Selling England by the Pound (when they are, in my opinion, on top form) I recommend all of these by the way. If you enjoy albums after this, I think you will find this to be far superior as Peter Gabriel made Genesis. When he left they just did a few empty prog albums before turning rock pop. All the same you should enjoy this whether this is a first Genesis buy or your last. I hope I've given valid advice. Toodle Pipskie (is that how you spell it?)
Gabriel's magnum opus with Genesis (2004-06-21)

English art rockers Genesis released their seventh(and lone double studio) album entitled The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway in November of 1974. The album was created at a time where tensions in the band were astronomically high. Lead singer Peter Gabriel was going through some personal and professional problems while this album was being created(his daughter was born prematurely and uncertainty if his daughter would live(luckily she survived), his failed attempt at a filmscript and his bandmates were angered that Peter was more concerned about his family than the band(in later years, all the members would become parents)). Despite the on-going tensions in the group, Gabriel created one final masterpiece with Genesis before he left the band in May of 1975 after the tour in support of The Lamb. TLLDoB was a concept album about a Puerto Rican kid named Rael whom falls into a netherworld known as New York and struggles to find himself throughout the course of the album. Some of the many standouts on this album are the title cut, In the Cage(arguably the best song on the album), Back in NYC, Counting Out Time, The Carpet Crawlers(a concert staple for many years), The Chamber of 32 Doors, The Lamia, The Colony of Slippermen and the closing track It. I first discovered this album in early September of 1997, when I picked up a used cassette copy(would buy the remastered CD two months later), and I was shocked on how excellent it really is and is today one of my Top 20 favorite rock albums of all time. Unfortunately Peter Gabriel left after the tour in support of this album and eventually guitarist Steve Hackett would quit as well in late 1977. If you want the best of the Gabriel era Genesis, buy this album!

This is probably one of the greatest albums ever made to the music enthusiast and musician, certainly right at the top of all the Genesis/Pete Gabriel efforts.

Genesis is an acquired taste. They are a little too arty for many people, and I would never play them in the car with my co-workers on the way to lunch. However, if you are a fan, then this concept album revolving around Rael's nightmarish adventures should be worth your time. Using words to describe their music is futile. You either like the music, or you don't. I like "Back In N.Y.C.", but all the cuts are good.

TLLDOB comes with a booklet of lyrics and notes (requires a magnifing glass.)

Other Genesis I have:Seconds Out (a good choice for beginners - double disc, live)Trespass (early, rough, pre-Hackett and Collins)Nursery CrymeWind and WutheringInvisible Touch (it's polished and pop-ish, but I like it)

"You can tell by the night fires where Rael has been"

The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway is the longest album Genesis ever made, only double studio album and final album with Peter Gabrial. It was a wonderfull way to end his 7 album career with the group and thier early period. Altough Peter only plays flute on 5 songs on the album Cookoo Cocoon, In The Cage, The Lamia, Silent Sorrow In Empty Boots and The Light Lies Down On Broadway his presence is very strong on this album. Gabriel wrote the intro in the booklet, most of the songs and he naturally sang most of the songs while the rest of the group performed strongly as well especially Phil Collins who did some fine vibe playing. An elaborate concept album this is clearly the groups best album in any of thier configurations.
