Lindas' vocals shine in this must have collection of standards! (2008-04-26)

If there is one thing that jumps out at me when I am listening to the tracks on this two CD,32 track collection,is Rondstadts' vocals. One might be tempted to say "who knew?".After all her claim to fame previous to this was in the rock n roll genre, but if you listened closely to her then you can see that there was much more vocally in reserve in such songs as "Ohh,baby, baby" and "Blue Bayou".That reserve comes out in spades in this collection and shows what a talent Linda is.These are some of the best that the proverbial American Songbook has to offer, songs like:"You go to my Head","Skylark","Am I Blue" and her big hit made famous originally by Bob Crosby and the Bobcats,"What's New?".All done beautifully. The only drawback I can hear are the arrangements.First they aren't consistent enough throughout to sustain the power of,a say,"What's New?".Secondly, there are some tunes that have beginnings that just don't match up musically with the rest of the song. For example "Falling in Love Again" starts out with Linda singing along with a music-box like backing before going into a light upbeat version of it.It's a combo that,to me,doesn't quite do justice to the song or Lindas' vocals.Or third, others like "My Funny Valentine" that are just "odd" and totally weak throughout. But thankfully they are the exceptions more than the rule,I DO like this compilation of the three albums she did in this vein and it certainly deserves a wide audience.Linda's versions and vocal abilities certainly far outpace by light years those done by more recent interpretors such as Rod Stewart. And one also might say she was a bit ahead of her time in that respect also.Who can forget Linda originally appearing on TV shows promoting these songs in her lavish period dress backed by the orchestra? It sure caught my attention and I'm also sure it drew new fans into re-discovering/introducing the great songs that she was singing. And if nothing else, her endeavours were well worth it.A CD well worth getting.A great package:beautiful vocals, generally pleasing Riddle arrangements and some of the best songs ever written.Who could ask for anything more?

I bought Linda Ronstadt's albums with Nelson Riddle "What's New, Lush Life & For Sentimental Reasons" as they were released on cassette tape and wore the tapes out. When "Round Midnight" came out on CD I had to have it. I also found and bought the 33 1/3 albums. The liner notes in "For Sentimental Reasons" by Jonathan Schwartz, WNEW/1986 states all that needs to be said about these extraordinary 32 songs. "Nelson Riddle died last year at sixty-four. His immense body of work stands as one of the great achievements in American arts. That a contemporary figure like Linda Ronstadt had the courage to address the great catalogue of American standard songs, and the presence of mind to lure Nelson out of his cherished reclusivity, was a great piece of luck for us all. The albums contain Nelson Riddle's last arrangements and Linda Ronstadt's finest singing. Nelson's strings never overstate their case. They speak with dignity, with eloquence, without gushing out at us, without Tchaikovskying us with sugarplums. They pay attention to the story of the lyric without trivializing the event. And the solo performances that Nelson always sanctioned! A mournful trombone, the quiet chirp of the muted trumpet and the tough splash of the saxophone, speaking out in front of the violins at Nelson's command. Ronstadt responds to all of it with her awesome indelibility, her soaring passion. These songs will place them in your mind for keeps."

As famed music critic Will friedwald says in his book "jazz singing", linda Ronstadt is not professional enough to sings standards, and as Firedwald also mentions even though she hired Nelson Riddle, his great arrangemts make her sound even more ametuerish. Even Plas Johnson's dreamy sax solos cant make her sound good. Too bad, what a waste!

If you look up the phrase "lush arrangements" in a dictionary, you should be directed to this release. Nelson Riddle's work is outstanding. Linda Ronstadt, of whom I am not otherwise particularly familiar, does an outstanding job of interpreting these American standards. Perhaps coming freshly to this genre of music gives her an advantage, for her renditions have a certain naivette to them that is really quite beguiling. I believe every word out of her mouth. I get chills listening to this album. Highly recommended.

Linda sings the Great American Songbook

I don't know how Linda came to team up with Nelson Riddle to record the three albums that make up this double CD, but it was a truly inspired pairing. A few of these songs are famous, particularly When I fall in love and When you wish upon a star, but many of them will only be known to those familiar with the songs of the twenties, thirties and forties.

With Nelson Riddle and his orchestra providing the backing, Linda mostly sings lush ballads. I list some of the songs with their original hit-makers - note that where a song was a hit for several artists, only the biggest is given - which is not necessarily the most famous. In some cases, a cover version was a bigger hit a few years later. For example, Bewitched was a minor hit in 1941 for Leo Reisman, but six versions hit the top ten in 1950. Five others charted higher than Doris Day, but her version is the one you are most likely to come across. On the other hand, When I fall in love was originally a hit for Doris Day, but Nat King Cole had a huge British hit with the song.

What's new (Bing Crosby)Someone to watch over me (Gertrude Lawrence)I don't stand a ghost of a chance with you (Bing Crosby)What'll I do (Paul Whiteman)Skylark (Dinah Shore)Mean to me (Ruth Etting)You took advantage of me (Paul Whiteman)Sophisticated lady (Duke Ellington)My old flame (Guy Lombardo)You go to my head (Larry Clinton)But not for me (Harry James)I get along without you very well (Red Norvo)Am I blue (Ethel Waters)I love you for sentimental reasons (Nat King Cole)Straighten up and fly right (Andrews sisters)Little girl blue (Margaret Whiting)

Linda and Nelson's choice of songs is impeccable. Perhaps they would have continued to record together, but Nelson died in 1985 following years of poor health - given his health, the quality of these recordings is even more remarkable.
