Editorial Reviews
From Amazon.co.uk
As tour guide on a trip through the midnight-to-dawn streets of Los Angeles that the beautiful people never see through the smoked- glass windows of their limos, Waits details the lives of hipsters, down-and-outers, and lost causes in latter-day beat poetry and small- jazz-combo arrangements. This live album from 1975 almost has the quality of standup comedy, but the routines are richer and more carefully drawn. Check out the vivid detail, low humor, and hooker- with-a-heart-of-gold emotionalism Waits brings to songs such as "Nighthawk Postcards", "Putnam County", and a memorable reading of trucker poet Red Sovine's "Big Joe and Phantom 309". --Daniel Durchholz

Chronique amazon.fr
--Daniel Durchholz

RAW AS OLD WHISKY (2004-02-20) In "Nighthawks at the Diner" Tom Waits serves up the rawunderbelly of society like scrambled eggs in a cool skillet. When I first heard this album I was immediately reminded of the 1950s beat poets of the lost generation. The despair, and desperation of harbored souls howls through the backalleys of desolation row. This is America the beautiful. The inevitable outcome of the Industrial Revolution.
A true bar buddy (2004-02-12) Listening to this album is like sitting in a booth across from Tom one-on-one. "Let me tug on your coat for a while" he rasps. While these are not his very best songs they are greatly entertaining. Mr. Waits has more one-liners than Henny Youngman. His story about a cup of coffee "too weak to defend itself" against a rowdy veal cutlet is priceless. He may sound like he's three sheets in the wind but I'm convinced that no one could deliver such a magnificent live performance PUI (performing under the influence). A good cd to put on when you're driving alone at night.
upon a foggy night (2003-11-01) This is some awesome music. Not only is tom witty, he plays tunes that rip into your soul, and make you hungry. Not recommended for anyone on an empty stomach...Lord knows what you might end up eating...or where it's been
He does it again!!!! (2003-10-04) An essential for a Waits fan. A great example of barroom music at its best. The songs "warm beer and cold women(need I say more)","better without a wife", and "Big Joe and the phantom 309" are great tracks. Waits makes you feel you are sitting in the bar with him!!! Waits is in a class of his own!
An amazing portrait of the east to west American life (2003-08-04) Tom waits has lyrics that will make you feel- doesn't matter how they will. In "Nighthawks at the diner" his words blend together with the rythem and the listener's emotions so well it's unbelievable. Throughout the whole live album, you could hear the distinct (and talented) stand-up bass player plucking at the strings under Mr. Waits' one of a kind voice and these combinations spark such ideas and sentiments. Tom Waits has always been my favorite musican since he is so experimental but successful in every album of his, you never get bored of his music. There is always a new play on words to pay attention to or a major detail in the melody. This album (nor any Waits album) shouldn't be missed.
