Editorial Reviews

Clapton's best (2003-08-23)

If you only buy one Clapton C D, this one should be it.Some may call it a blues album, and to an extint it is, but this is rock and roll at its best. I feel that it captures Clapton at the apex of his career. One could justify getting this just for song Double Trouble, which gets a blistering work out, better than studio version on No Reason to cry. While most songs are bluesy type country flavored work outs, there are a few well known Clapton songs " Wonderful Tonite" , Lay down Sally","Cocaine", it is the guitar solos on the older standards that make this Clapton's most satisfying album. I would recommend this even over his "crossroads" box set. Do yourself a favor, Get this CD!!
One of Eric Clapton's better live albums (2003-06-06)

Although this double CD, which at times ventures into country-rock and folk-rock, doesn't match the raw, ragged energy of "Eric Clapton's Rainbow Concert", it is a good album in its own right.

Recorded on the 1979 world tour, the album includes a couple of songs from Clapton's then-current release "Backless" (Bob Dylan's "If I Don't Be There By Morning" is one of them), as well as material from his previous solo albums and a few tunes from his guitar hero-period. Eric Clapton's rendition of "Early In The Morning" is a bit lethargic and certainly doesn't match Elmore James' version, and a couple of other songs seem a bit pedestrian as well. But there are also fine live versions of the slightly country-flavoured "Lay Down Sally", the pop ballad "Wonderful Tonight" and Big Maceo Merriweather's "Worried Life Blues", and Clapton's playing on "Double Trouble" and "Ramblin' On My Mind" retains the smouldering fire of his earliest recordings. And it's almost impossible to screw up "Blues Power" and "Cocaine" (great solos there, too).

In general, however, "Just One Night" is somewhat more easy-listening and not as bluesy as you might have hoped for, nor indeed as rocking. A bit more groove and a few more crunchy riffs would have been a welcome addition. And whether or not you feel that Rick Danko's "All Of Our Past Times" belongs on an Eric Clapton album, in between "Worried Life Blues" and an (admittedly not too good) reading of "After Midnight", is a matter of taste.

But it's still a good album, especially if you like Clapton's solo albums from the mid-seventies from which it draws quite heavily. And he closes with "Further On Up The Road". No musical numbers, thank God (!).

one of my vinyl favorites (2002-03-04)

I played this album to [alot], t'll my college roomate appropriated it permanently. Great to have it again on cd. Honestly, I think Eric Clapton the solo artists is WAY overrated. His material with Cream, Derek and the Dominos, Blind Faith, and Delaney and Bonnie was of a much higher quality. That said, the guitar playing and pop is still great to listen to. His US tour of the same year was quite memorable.Tulsa Time is classic solo Clapton.
Not Just Clapton, Albert Lee Too (2002-02-03)

I agree with all these reviews - this is a 5 star album - but why didn't anyone mention what a great treat it is to hear Clapton and Albert Lee (one of the preeminent country guitarists alive today) going back and forth - check out Further on Down the Road for some great duets - this is my favorite EC album.

"Blues Power", "After Midnight", "Cocaine" y "Further Up on the road" te haran transportar a otra dimensión. Es un disco obligado en cualquier colección.
