Released in 1995, this outstanding live opus closes the Allman Brothers' New Testament in dramatic fashion. Old-timers might cry blasphemy, but the band's resurgence in the early 1990s came remarkably close to recapturing the glory of their seemingly insurmountable peak in the late 1960s and early 1970s. With five years in the band under his belt, slide guitarist Warren Haynes had truly come into his own, magically interacting with Dickey Betts and serving up scorching leads that might have made even Duane look twice. The standard blues covers like "You Don't Love Me" and "The Same Thing" receive wonderful treatments, and Haynes's own "Soul Shine" is a worthy addition to the Allman songbook, but the centerpiece is the acoustic "Liz Reed," which matches the band's greatest performances, New Testament or Old. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews
****½ - an excellent modern-day follow-up to the Fillmore LP (2004-03-03) The sound on this live recording is superbly crisp and clear, and the Allman Brothers Band play excellent renditions of old and new material, including an acoustic "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed", the bluesy "Sailin' 'Cross The Devil's Sea", the soulful R&B-grind of "Soulshine", and the pure blues of "You Don't Love Me" and Willie Dixon's "The Same Thing". The entire band plays with grit and nerve all the way through. Almost every song is a highlight, and this muscular live album is a very worthy latter-day addition to the Allman Brothers' catalogue.
Awesome CD, One of the Allman Brother's Best (2003-09-09) An excellent buy, especially for the experienced Allman Brothers listener. I though Jessica was a little under tempo, but the extire album is awesome. Duane would be proud of what this band's become.
